Tilers left a crate outside my home with leftovers

Hi, I got my tiles put down in my home a couple of weeks ago. The tilers did a great job, I got a great deal and was very happy with the job etc.
The problem is that the tilers left a crate outside my house, my house is a terrace house, with the left over broken tiles and some floor sound insulation dumped in it. I have rang the tiler and he keeps saying that he will call over to get it but he's very busy at the moment. This is going on now for two weeks. In the meantime it is starting to break up and people are using it to dump rubbish in. It's starting to really annoy me. Can anyone advise me what i should do? I can't move it myself and I refuse to pay for a skip. I have told the tiler that i will have to give his number to the management company if they start asking questions, as it is now classified as being illegally dumped. Last week I found two kids palying with the broken tiles...it is now a danger as well.

Any advice?

In fairness Sammie, it's up to you to get rid of the tiles unless this was agreed with the tiler. If you have a car, bring them to your local dump. They may or may not accept the tiles as they are classed as builder's rubble, thou I never had a problem getting rid of them before.

In Dublin, you will find the local recycling centre's in Ballymount and Ballyogan.

Hi thanks for the reply. I was never told this, the tiler also said he would come and collect it. It's driving me mad at this stage.

Everyone is saying to me it's their fault as I didn't leave it there, but at this stage I just want rid of the thing!

Coolmine is re-opening this Thursday (think it opens until 8.00pm)
Damastown will also take this

Will cost you €8 i.e. one bin tag per car load to dispose

cheers thanks for that.
by bin load do you mean one of the wheely bins?
it's going to be a messy job! what should I transport broken tiles in? cardboard boxes??
sorry about the stupid questions, first house, first time tiling never thought about this situation after tiling was complete. thought the tilers took it all away with them!!!

At least the tiler did a good job, we had some cowboy in here, unfortunately the mrs paid him in full before he was finished and he did an awful job AND fecked off leaving a load of rubbish.

Buzzard,

It is common practice for Builders to clear up their own mess, why would it be the customers ???

Very unprofessional of tiler.

You should send a letter to Tiler detailing your issues regarding health and safety, why should you clear up his mess ??

If it was bothering me so much and I wanted rid of it before Christmas I would consider one of the free bags being supplied at supermarkets at the moment. If he did a very reasonabe job he might not have factored in the price of the removal of the rubbish. For the sake of €80 you might be annoying yourself unnecessarily.

sammie why not take the Danger away from the kids by putting the crate in your back garden until you can arrange a time with the tiler to take it away in a safe manner for you and the kids?

You have my sympathy. I had the same problem, except he left them inside the house. After a fortnight of tripping over them, I decided to leave them outside until I could figure out a way to rid myself of them.

There were a good few good tiles in it, I saved a few, and left the box outside the door. I must have left more good tiles on the top, because when I came home the following evening, the dammed things were gone.

I think that somebody took them thinking that they were a box of good tiles.

Maybe if you could make them look like something worth stealing, the same thief might think to relieve you of them!!!!

Hi, I don't have a back garden. I live in a duplex. So the crate is outside, there is a duplex on the right hand side of me and a two bed house on the left, under me is a two bed appartment. So it is oustide a number of people's home.

It's not a box, that's the problem. I would get rid of them myself it was only a box but it's a CRATE full of mess at this stage....It's going to be a nightmare picking the stuff out, and what am I to do with the crate?!? get a sledge hammer and smash it up?!?!?

I don't think that the tiler would be too bothered by this approach, TBH. It is arguable whether it is his mess or yours, considering the rubbish is the result of a job you ordered.

Look, be sensible about this. At the end of the day, the only one suffering by the remiss of the tiler is you. If you did the tiling yourself, how would you deal with the rubbish? How are you going to deal with other stuff that will invariable accumulate in the coming years, such as getting rid of the broken coffee table, the old rugs and carpets you don't want any more?

Hi Sammie,

I recently had work done in my house by 2 different tilers and each left behind a mess. I just took it that we had to remove it. We got one of the mini skips. I think they are about a tenner to buy in the supermarket, 3 different sizes. They are really handy to use and when you fill them you just ring the company and pay by cred card over the phone (about 70 euro I think) and they pick it up within 4 days. I got 2 of these skips and on both occassions they were picked up the next day. You could be waiting a long time for the tiler to come back and collect them so I would just save yourself a lot of hassle and get one of the mini skips.

That's going to be very effective I'd say  Far better to be pragmatic about and just adopt any of the solutions offered here to clean up the mess yourself. Trades rarely clean up after themselves, on private jobs or large building sites.

Hi Deedee

do you have a link to one of those skips?
who do i ring to take it away?

thanks

any tiler or tradesman that i know do not carry leftover building materials away with them. i would expect them to clean up after themselves ie sweep up and put leftover mess in a container or something, but if you didnt agree this before the job dont expect them to take the stuff away
