Which is better or more pratical? not sure which to put into my kitchen.... guy i talked to that makes kitchens said that everyone is putting in Islands!

Overall available space may dictate - if you have plenty of room I'd certainly go with the island.

Why can you not have an island with some seating. I've seen drawings where they were able to include both, that is if you have the space or that it is appropriate to same.

Can you picture how you will use your kitchen?

Breakfast bar says 1970s sitcom to me :D and I think islands are becoming common and will date a kitchen. My preference is for big spacious kitchen with table in the middle.

"Everyone" told me too I should put in an island but I don't like the way they use space making big kitchens seem small.

I'd go with a bit of both. We got an island installed where the counter overhangs on side with room for stools.

maybe its not called a breakfast bar? i seen it in a magazine... instead of an island the picture had piece of wood/worktop attached to the worktop at 90 degree angle... and you could sit under the bit "jutting out" and eat your food there!

Neither... don't do it... no islands... no breakfast bars...

go with breakfronts and broken height / varried heightwall units...

much more modern and individual!!!

my cunning plan is that you get an island that is on large castors with clip on kick boards.

That means that you can move it to the wall attaching it to the end of the work surface or have it out in the middle as an island

Hi UnaS,

I had an island added to my kitchen last year - don't know who I managed without it before. It is great addition for space - work tops not cluttered anymore - also for cooking, baking great and also for laying out plates and putting food on and for putting all the dirty dishes on before they go into dishwasher. I have 2 pot drawers, 2 wicker baskets for veg and the other side I keep baking stuffs and cook books - the top is granite and I have it curved at one end and have two nice high stools so it works as coffee dock or breakfast bar.

I have an island with a tall pull out drawer for the bin at one end (rectangular end) and at the other end it is rounded on a single round leg so I can put 3 tall stools there. It's great to have the workspace as previous poster said plus the kids can watch/help/eat/paint there. Most usefull item of furniture in my kitchen. It's also lower than the surrounding worksurfaces to make it easier to work on.

Will only have a meter either side of the island is that enough room? Kitchen 4.3m x 4.3m! Dont want the kitchen to seem small!

if you have the space go with an island - we have one (1.2 M * 2M) with 5 drawers at one end, huge beech butcher block over these, press with pull out bins and overhang which seats 4 and it's used constantly for everything - my 3.5 year old hops up on it and is able to help cook, when people are over it's really social to have coffee , drinks etc.

yup, island here as well, one side has an overhang so there are stools there for stting. actually is very handy when having someone over for dinner, tehy can sit there and talk while you cook...

that will be fine but the best thing for you to do is to mockup the island with large cardboard boxes, or at least draw with chalk on floor to see how you feel.

We put in a large island last year (room is 18 feet by 18 feet).
The island is about 6 by 4 foot with the two outer side used for seating.
we haven't used the table and chairs since last Xmas !!

It's great for preparing, dinners etc and party's.
We have the standard depth drawers for saucepans and 300mm deep cupboards on the rear of the island.

One defo thing to do is to route power to it, and put a socket under one of the overhangs - great for carving, laptop etc.

K
