Ebay Registering

I have been trying to set-up an ebay account, I had one before but let it lapse as i was travelling.
I go through the whole fill in your details blah blah blah, then i get directed to a page which says to finalise registering your account we will need to call you where we can give you a 4 digit code which you enter and registeration will be complete or else the other option is enter your credit card details and that will do also.
I have a paypal account which i will use with e-bay so i am not crazy about putting my credit card details onto e-bay.
I choose the call me and get the 4 digit code option, however the next page is the asks you to enter your phone number, must be a ground line and a number that hasnt been used before, i have entered my number every possible way, and every time it says no mobiles and reverts back to the re-enter your number page.I have mailed ebay through their contact us page but they havent replied, i tried getting phone numbers for them but they dont seem to have any.
anybody help me? whats the correct way to enter your number on this page or any other advice on registering, seems a bit stupid way to me, or is it trick that when the phone page doesnt work people have to put in their credit card details.

You do realise that they are both owned by the same company?

I assume you are registering on ebay.ie and not ebay.com

It should work - I just tried.

As you know, the number must be a landline. Are you sure you entered the area code in the first box and the rest of the number in the second box?

And if you're on dialup internet access, don't forget to select the "call me in 2 minutes" option and disconnect from the internet so the automated call can get through.
