what would be considered a suitable present for an 80 year old Male.

A trip down memory lane? lots of maps and match programmes etc on sale on ebay..... Or if they smoke, a new pipe?

Depends on the person. My 74 year old dad is really into gadgets, radios, computers etc. His friend wouldnt know one end of a computer from another. The one present they might have in common that they would like would be a good bottle of wine or whiskey.

Thanks for suggestions i'ts difficult for a person of that age. might give a voucher for a meal for himself and his wife.

Would he use a dvd?
The one "I'm Mike Murphy from RTE" would bring back memories. There seems to be a good selection of history of Ireland dvds on rte.ie/shop. Or you could get a painting ,print or old style photograph of a place that is special to him.

We're getting a nespresso for the wife's father.

We have a Gaggia and I've recently addicted him to espressos, as he can swallow them easier than a full mug of coffee. A nespresso is easier on his hands and comes in handy sachets (courtesy of the reviews on AAM!).

As Clubman says, it takes all sorts.

For the man who has everything, but is worried about his pearly gate appearance (and who is from the country), a charity goat or cow (a la Bothar) might be appreciated.

Company is often more important than material possessions to people as they grow older - you could arrange to take them both out to the theatre, for a meal, on a day trip to the country. If he is interested in football, take him to a match.

Agree with this one completely. A day or evening out of the ordinary would be a great gift provided you don't already do these things together.

If you do activities as a matter of course then why not forget age and give what you'd appreciate yourself (within reason!) Age shouldn't be about religious emblems or age associated gifts. He'd probably get a good laugh out of something he wouldn't ordinarily expect to receive. Celebrate life and future years.

Sorry to bring the tone down a bit, but I reckon he would probably appreciate a 20 year old female . . .

What about a front page of a newspaper for the day he was born? I got the Irish Times front page for a 50 yr old and it was very well received.

my granddad is 80 and I've bought him Lifestory for christmas, its a book that helps you write your memoirs [broken link removed] and a few bob goes to the hospice.

well my nana asked us to get a strip a gram for my granddad for his 80, we did she was great! he got such a laugh out of it. All my cousins and uncles decided it was worth turning 80 for! ;)

Following some very good recommendations from people on AAM, how about a personalised bottle of wine from the following website:
[broken link removed]
I'm going to get one for my 78 yr old dad at Christmas.
Or also on this site, they have books with mementos from the 50s/60s etc - It seems to be like a scrapbook, with cut-outs from the papers back then, old food labels etc.

Or another suggestion I got from AAM - how about a trip to the National Concert Hall to see some christmas carols or a concert - have a look at www.nch.ie/

It depends on the person, but I know my dad is very into books etc which describe life in Ireland when he was growing up.
