How expensive is air conditioning to install & run??

Hi,

I've been reading threads on HRV and HVAC and passive houses and geothermal heating etc. (and I'm totally bamboozled) but my main concern is not heating a house, but keeping it cool. For the last few years we haven't required heating at all for at least 6 months of the year, in fact I crave air-conditioning most of the summer!

So in our new build house (that's just in the planning stages) I was wondering if someone could give me simplistic facts on what we should do to end up with a house that is warm in the winter and super-cool in the summer......!!

Thanks in advance.... Mr Ed

Can comment on installation charges but have heard people living abroad mention that it is every bit as expensive as running heating in winter.

get someone to do a BER assessment off the plans to see if the design is prone to over-heating in summer... that facility is part of the BER assessment.
Many designs make the mistake of including too much south facing glazing, leading to over-heating in summer days.

I know what it's like to crave AC , for me it was a MUST when I lived in Moscow. But in all honesty , it's not necessary in Ireland , the best ( or only good thing ) about our climate is the free AC delivered 24/7/365 by the Atlantic .
Apart from the money cost , burning electricity to AC Ireland must have an environmental cost.
IMO it would be better to spend the money on roof insulation , continental venetian blinds on the outside, look at shades to keep the mid summer sun out and do like the continentals do ,close the windows on hot days to keep the cool air inside and ventilate at night .
If you design the heat issues away , you will have no running costs or breakdowns .
