How to calculate & pay employee salaries?

I'm just wondering how employers generally calculate and pay salaries. I am aware of the taxcalc.eu calculator, which is great, but do any employers actually use this and then make up their own pay slips in excel or whatever, or is it best to use other specialised software packages to produce wage slips?

If so, has anyone any recommendations?

You could try using Payback Payroll Software
www.payback.ie

There is a free trial that lets you process pay for two periods.

[Note: I'm affiliated with Payback]

Thanks Graham, nice site, package also looks good, but no mention of Mac compatability unfortunately.

I think as it is only myself for the moment I might just do things manually and wait until the new year (and the new employees!) to invest in the software.

Payback is not Mac compatible. Irish Payroll software is a bit of a niche market to begin with.

(Note that if you do buy Payback now, the licence extends until this time next year, including all updates. You can process pay all the way back from 2004 into 2008)

Thanks for the feedback folks. To be honest, I really can't afford to be paying €29 per week, especially when it's only myself at the moment, and will be at most an extra 2 employees in the new year.

I've done an exhaustive search of the net and I can't find anything that is both Mac compatible and suitable for Ireland.

A Mac version of Irish Payroll software would be such a niche (at the moment) that any company developing a product would have to price it quite highly. It would probably be less expensive for someone to buy a PC and run the PC version, than the end price of a Mac version.

Can you run Win XP on an intel based Mac?
Leopard apparently allows this
http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html

Sounds pretty good.

I agree, too much of a niche market for a company to develop the software. I see [broken link removed] do a Mac version, but the Irish site has no mention of it anywhere. Also, from what I understand, if you want to run Payroll you must purchase Quickbooks and run the two together. A bit cheeky if you ask me!

I actually have a PC laptop so could run any software I like really, but to be honest I want to move away from PC's altogether.

Without doubt the best payroll package on the market is 'Collsoft'. Not dear and very easy to set up and operate. Mac compatibility? Dont know.

Years ago there was a basic Irish payroll for the Mac. I believe that Apple in Cork are using Micropay for their payroll.

I use Big Red Book Payroll, intuitive and very easy to use but am not sure about MAC compatability. I got a 'limited use' version of the package for free when opened a BoI business bank account. Will need to licence the package as the company grows.

No affiliation.

Just checked Sage website again and it states that they do not support Apple Mac.

Apple in Cork must be running it through BootCamp, or on PC's
