Flies in my apartment, how can I get rid of...

I have an unusual problem with flies in the back rooms of my aparment, 2 bedrooms & ensuite. The back of my building faces onto lots of land and fields and some cows etc and I think that maybe why...or maybe not!!

They fly around the room and they're the buzzy sort of flies and all my lampshades are full of dead ones, also the apartment is very warm a lot so they fly around and then just fall to the floor dead which means my window sills and floors have dead flies on them.

When I open either window a load just fly in.

Is there anything I can get to put on the windows to stop them flying in because I'm afraid that I'll be asleep and one will drop into my mouth or something.
Also the buzzy noise they make is so annoying.

I've not met any neighbours yet so not sure if anyone else is having the same problem.

Don't mean to be sexist but you must be a woman - this is a classic 'ladyfear'! :D

Have you tried lighting citronella candles in the rooms?

sounds like you need fly screens on the windows. you know - that mesh that stops insects but lets fresh air in.

Google "flyscreens for windows" and you'll get some ideas. If you use google.co.uk there seem to be plenty of flyscreen providers.

By any chance does the sash (part that opens) fit flush into the window frame on the outside and is there a small even space the whole way around the window between the sash and the window frame? The reason I ask this question is that the flies are able to nest in here and when you open the window they fly in - if this is the situation rub a citronella candle all around (or something that the flies hate) the edge of this gap and hopefully that would help.

I have the same problem with velux windows and the flies seem to be nesting up in between timber up where the handle fitting is - my dad suggested rubbing some moth balls along the edge where they are nesting. They are even getting into windows that are rarely opened. Hubby and I steam cleaned all the velux windows last night and I will check again this evening if there are any dead or alive flies again.

The climate seems to have the flies gone crazy.

yes I am a woman and I don't want bugs in my gob while I'm sleeping.

sometimes you can hear them buzzing and then a very small thud and you know they've dropped dead and hit the floor! I always have the aparment very hot so they obviously can't handle the heat.

I'll try the citronella candles, I never thought of that. Just don't want to be lighting candles in the rooms when I'm not in them.

There are deffo no gaps around the window, we checked this when snagging.

I'll check out screens aswell!

Maybe it is something to do with the climate but my second bathroom, kitchen and lounge are fine, never seen flies in any of them, its just the back rooms facing out onto the fields

The gap between the sash and the window frame would not be a snag problem it is to to with the design of the window i.e. import, rational etc and it would be only visable from the outside.

Irish windows are usually made with the sash overlapping the frame of the window, therefore no space for the flies to nest in. Just need more info on the type of windows that you have to be able to offer proper practical advise.

I would'nt like the smell of the citronella candle in my bedroom either.

How big are these things?!? Thuds on floors?!? Ye Gods! Seriously, it seems unusual at this time of year for no many flies to be active. Have you attempted to find out the attraction. It cannot be just because there are fields nearby. Daare I suggest that maybe a decomposing dead animal or something is resting in peace somewhere in the field?

I have the same problem with flies and velux windows. Nasty stuff, it looks like they're nesting or sleeping (hibernating?) and when the windows are opened they "fall" out, sometimes they lie there for a bit and then start flying. Delightful! Seems to be a new batch each time the windows are opened. And they are pretty damn big too, not the tiny fruit fly things but ones with bodies!! Will give the moth balls or citronella a shot.

Thanks NHG, I'll get more info on the windows, they're a Swiss make as far as I know.

So, when I say a Thud I mean a small fly thud. In the dark and quiet I can hear them, we can hear them hitting the blinds when they're flying in between the window and blind aswell and the buzzing on top of that.

There could very well be a decomposing animal carcass somewhere, its farmland all around us.
A lot of cows and I think flies tend to annoy cows....(I think)

Shoegal...that sounds exactly like what we have.
these are not small flies.

If I want the windows open I have to stand ready with the hoover to get them all, they just all fall thru when the window opens.

And its not only the horrible dead flies all over the place but anytime anyone goes to squish one with a rolled up mag they can't be happy with just one thump, they have to give a good 3 or 4 just to make sure they're good and dead...which results in mashed flies for me to clean

sorry to any insect lovers out there!!
