How long does passport need to be valid?

Hello- hope someone can help. I am going on holidays (Spain) from the 23rd of May until the 3rd of June. Looked at my passport a few months back and saw that it is in date until July of this year, so i thought i was fine. A friend of mine were talking last night and she said my passport needs to be in date for 6 months before you enter the country. Is this right?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That's a common misconception. The 6 month period applies to some countries but not Spain. My passport expires 26th May and I was in Spain (and got out) back in March.
It just needs to be valid on day of return.

Thanks NorfBank. That's a huge relief. I woulld have to have gotten marriage certs and everything to change my name. Now i just need to get the 2 small ones a passport.

Yep, no problem. All you need is photo ID (your passport is grand) and a return ticket.

Actually, if you're German, your passport can be expired for 5 years & it's still good for Malta!
