I am going there with a few friend for 3 nights at the end of Nov. I know it is going to be very cold and have heard it is very expensive. We have not booked a hotel yet as always wait till closer to the time to get better rates.
Anyone have any advice on what areas to stay in?
What to do - good pubs etc and what prices we could expect to pay.
Any advice appreciated.

there is a karoake bar called golden hits is a great laugh

the local off license system is run by the government and only open say 9 to 5 its called system bolaget its loke goint to argos!

Compared to Dublin Stockholm is actually cheaper. Alcohol/beer is about Dublin prices ( slightly higher) but spirits can be expensive. Eating out is cheaper but goto trendy/arty areas like Sodermalm & eat a full dinner before 6pm for the best deals. Wine ordered with food can be outrageous so beware. If you do your homework you can easily get a 4 star centrally located hotel for 120 Euros a night. Try www.birgerjarl.se ,fantastic hotel.
Clothing is much cheaper than here with great deals especially in sports shops as sport is seasonal in Sweden & they'll want to get rid of all the winter stock for summer. Make sure you visit Gamla Stan ( Old Town ) in which the Royal Palace resides. I'm no Royalist but for pure beauty this has to be seen. Drinks/Bars best in Sodermalm ( arty / studenty district ). Sturaplan is trendy district with drinks prices to match but thats where Stockholms rich & famous go. ( Very near to BirgerJarl hotel above).

Enjoy!

As above, head to Sodermalm area (southside of Gamla Stan) for bars and nightlife. Although the Dubliner pub in the city centre is (or was) very popular with locals.

Cheers that hotel is full - would Sodermalm be a good area to stay in - how far from the centre/main attractions is it?

Not far at all. Walkable , although coming back from the town involves a fairly uphill walk if memory serves. You're probably talking top of Harcourt Street to GPO distance wise, if that's any help.

Stochholm is quite compact & is served very well by an underground. Sodermalm is an ideal area to stay in. Its not as glitzy as the Sturaplan/Strandvagen area but is perfectly fine. Lots of bars are located here though so it could be very handy for you :). Taxis are quite cheap to get around in & they are plentyful. Word of caution make sure you know exactely where you want to go( write it down!) as many Taxi drivers are new to Stockholm & not familiar with Stockholms notorious one way systems.! Make sure you take a boat trip around the city which is made up of hundreds of islands. Go early though as in Nov you'll be wondering who turned out the lights at 3pm.!!

Thks so it gets dark v v early over there. So areas to look for hotels - city centre, Sturaplan/Strandvagen and Sodermalm - will look next week.

Silly question maybe, but I assume that there is a train from the airport straight to the centre of Stockholm??? If so has any one used it and how much does it cost.

Thank you

Hi

There is a train from the airport to the citycentre. Very handy, takes 20 minutes. http://www.arlandaexpress.com

There is also a bus service from the airport. http://www.flygbussarna.com/en/default.asp

We visited Stockholm in August and stayed this hotel. http://www.eng.stallmastaregarden.se/
It was really nice, just outside the main hustle and bustle, beside an inlet from the sea. The above mentioned bus service stops outside the hotel. We booked with hotel.com or one of those websites, which gave us a good deal.

It will be dark and cold in the end of November, but with hat, gloves and good shoes you will be OK. As they say in Sweden "There are no bad weather, only bad clothes". :)

Will you be there for Sunday 2 December? First of Advent is a big thing in Sweden. Almost everyone, even those who dont normally, go to chuch to sing the traditional carols. There will also be Christmas markets around. You definately have to visit Gamla Stan, the old town, they would have Christmas markets on around that time.

The transport system is handy and easy. There is also a Stockholm card which includes travel and entrance to museums etc.

Skansen is a nice place to visit. It's an open air museum, with buildings from different areas of Sweden, and also animals. [broken link removed]

Have fun!

PS. Dont worry too much about the prices, it's not hugely different to Dublin.

Yep going to be there for the 2nd of Dec flying out the 3rd december. Did you fly with Ryanair how far is that airport from the city?

A return ticket on the Arlanda Express from the Airport is 420SEK approx €45 per person which is quite expensive but the service is excellent & the journey takes 20mins reaching speeds upto 200km. Quite an experience compared to Oirland.!
Arlanda Airport is quite far outside Stockholm. Taxis do set prices of approx 395/495 SEK from Stockholm/Arlanda. So if there will be 2 or more of you this is the best option as you will arrive at the hotel door from the airport. Large stickers are on the sides of the Taxi windows showing such prices. The hotel will book one of there for you on the way back. Takes the hassel out of lugging bags around.

There are 4 of us so taxis should like the best option is it around 9k to the Euro. How long would a taxi take?

Which airport are you flying into??? Arlanda( SAS) or Skavsta ( RyanAir)

You can take the "Expressen" or Taxis from Arlanda but only real option from Skavsta is the Flyg Bus.

Taxi from Arlanda to Stockholm in non-rush hour is approx 40 mins.

Yes, approx 9SEK to the EURO

If you are flying Ryanair you will probably flying to Skavsta, which is not the main airport. On their website it says

"Stockholm (Skavsta) Airport is situated 100 KM south of Stockholm and 7 KM northwest from Nyköping. Airport coaches operates to and from Stockholm/Södertälje and Norrköping/Linköping. The local bus (No. 715) to Nyköping and Oxelösund operates from 04.00 am until midnight. The local train station in Nyköping is 7 km away. A taxi to Nyköping from costs SEK 175 and should take approximately 10 minutes, while a taxi to the centre Stockholm costs approximately SEK 1,300 and should take approximately 60 minutes."

Yep going to Skavsta - looks like it is another Beauvais :p

One of my friends has mentioned going on a booze cruise, they did say one goes to Cophenhagen but looking at the map that looks too far. Have heard there could be one to Finland- has anyone heard of this/gone on it etc. Is it worth looking into - this w/end is as much about having fun with a few sights thrown in :D

Stockholm to Helsinki is an overnight ferry so you'd be better off just spending the time you have in Stockholm. It's one of my favourite cities.
