Halloween treats as an economic barometer

This has no basis in statististical reality, but my own experience of Halloween treats this year as oppsed to last is:

lots more apples and fruit in general
lots more monkey nuts
more homemade treats (popcorn, rice crispie buns etc)
less made up bags, i.e. last year lots of people had sandwich bags containing at least 4 treats (must have cost a fortune).
The darlings having gone to bed, I have had to bin a lot less than last year. I wonder is this a reflection of people tightening their belts?

Are you serious ? That's interesting. Maybe it's the mortgage rates. We gave out all chocolate this year for the first year as there were always complaints about nuts/apples in previous years. (Our own is too young to collect yet !)

Sweets all round around our way. Does this mean that we live in a privileged area or people are living beyond their means? Of course these are not mutually exclusive. Maybe George Lee can investigate?

sweets all round here too. we had about 30 trick or treaters to night. unreal!:) The ones who came last were lucky to get a lolly!!!

On the face of it, I'd have to concur with SarahMc's unscientific sample.

I found things noticeably quieter on the fireworks front, too — although maybe that had more to do with the full-page ads in the press reminding people of the penalties for unlicensed possession/use of same...

I hurried home late this eveining. Forgot to pick up treats. Was followed up the steps by 3 really nice local kids. I hadn't even an orange in the house. I had to send them away empty handed. You should have seen the disappointment on their faces. They'd have expected something from me. I felt horrible

Maybe their parents will think I'm having mortgage trouble and bring me a food parcel?

Local French neighbours invited their friends with carloads of kids at about 6.30 p.m. last evening. The parents parked their cars 90% on the footpath making it impossible to pass bye without going out on the road. Hordes descended on the poor neighbours cleaning us out of our treats even before the locals arrived. One hour later they were all gone. They were like animals pushing and shoving at the door.
I usually keep an eye out when I am abroad for unusual sweets and bags to put them in. Each bag has about three items. Sometimes a packet of crisps and two other sweet treats. My own grandaughter called to some of the local houses where the second car is a BMW SUV only to be given a ball of silver paper with three pieces of popcorn, another, a piece of tissue with 4 monkey nuts in it. Someone had even bought those little packets of sweet "coke bottles" and split them up!!! She got 3 coke bottles in a piece of tissue!!. And we had the usual houses in total darkness......
Next year I will have to have Plan B.......

The last few years i noticed the kids getting greedy and being disappointed with nuts or fruit, a few even asked for money. Politely told where to go.

This year we are in a new estate with few kids, only had three callers who were small kids and their mothers who are neighbours. The mums told them only to take one bar but i had to make them take more as I had a feeling we wouldn't be overrun! Left with a big bowl of mini-flakes in the kitchen as well as two tubs of haribo sweets.....

Deffo getting quieter where my parents live.
5 kids knocked on the door last night and thats it. Normally the door would be open the whole night.

My sister had a halloween party for her kids and all the neighbours kids, games and food and a firework display, there was very few kids knocking on doors because they were all at the party...might be the way to go!!

I'm getting less keen on the idea of my nieces and nephews walking around in the cold and dark knocking on doors unless they're accompanied by an adult which take the fun out if it for them.

We had little bags of treats made up for the kids - mainly sweets I have to say - had a few gangs of kids around - all very nice and polite. Little sister came back with a full bag of treats after 2 hours out - found about 3 walnuts everything else was sweets, crisps even drinks such as capri sun. Had to laugh at costumes though - gang of 5 girls arrived to door aged approximately 12 - dressed in playboy outfits - bunny ears, tiny skirts, high heels and L-Plates. - Costumes not how I remember them - very few witches, ghosts and monsters

Were you auditing each contribution as she visited each house or something?

Have a bit of sympathy. I't not easy sticking a BMW SUV on the mortgage, juggling all those credit cards and meeting monthly debt repayments. And you want these people to think of halloween handouts? Preserving one's status and appearing at the school gates in the right SUV is very stressful! Look at the bigger picture! :)

It was our little one's first time to go round the doors, thanks to a kind offer from one of the older kids. We gave her a little pumpkin bag for her collection, and she came back with a Superquinn green bag full of sticky jellies and snax, and her little pumpkin bag buried in the corner of the big bag. One of the other mammys kindly stepped into the breach to compensate for our lack of understanding and provided the Superquinn bag.

We have a community BBQ thingy on the green, and obviously word has got around, as the number of non-resident kids attending had increased to a noticable number.

Its quite shocking, I'd like to know where the parents are that allowed them to dress like that.

gone be with the days we were we stuck rags in our hair and a bowler had and thought we were Boy George!!!
or a load of bangles on one arm made us Madonna...maybe thats just as sad though!!

Yeah - Boy George and Madonna are much better role models for kids than Playboy Bunnies.

You bin their uneaten treats!!

Maybe they worked out after last year to eat as many of their treats as they could before bed ;)
