Good to see RTE.ie abandoning the pinko namby-pamby liberal guff and taking a good ol' "straight talking" approach to this story....

Three drug traffickers arrested in Dublin
Friday, 26 October 2007 11:16

Three people have been arrested following an investigation into a Dublin based drug trafficking gang run by criminals from west Africa.

3.5kg of cocaine worth over €250,000 was seized as part of a joint operation between Customs Officers and the Garda National Drugs Unit.

Authorities have been monitoring and investigating the activities of the gang, which employes Lithuanians.

The gang has been smuggling cocaine through the postal service. The drugs were sent by courier from Peru to a safety deposit box in Rathmines over the past few days.

Three of the gang arrived yesterday afternoon and all were arrested as they collected the drugs.

They are now being questioned in Terenure and Rathmines Garda Stations and can be held for up to seven days.

The issue is not one of political correctness but one of accuracy, fairness and responsibility (e.g. not to jeopardise or prejudice the work of the justice system) which might be better reflected in the following sort of alteration to the original report (I am not a lawyer but I presume that RTÉ have one):

The gang has [allegedly] been smuggling cocaine through the postal service. The drugs were sent by courier from Peru to a safety deposit box in Rathmines over the past few days.

Yes I understand. But I always thought reporters keep their reports to exactly (or accurately enough) what the interviewed party tells them.
I assume somebody had to tell RTE News about the accurance? Maybe if the interviewed person used words such as: "alleged" "allegedly" they (RTE) would have? - Or is it still the solicitor's priority to review the report for errors like this?

Clubman, did they allegedly arrive, was it allegedly the afternoon, or were they there to allegedly collect the drugs?

For the sake of accuracy, why didn't they name the nationality? Would they have said west Europe if they were English or French or German? Or was this for the sake of the PC brigade?

There is a risk of prejudicing any trial if the defence can show that pre-trial publicity damages the chances of a fair trial. Remember how Haughey couldn't be tried after Harney's 'off-the-cuff' comments.

Does anyone know how you can post something to a 'safety deposit box'?

I don't know. I am not a lawyer. But, as I said above, I'm sure that RTÉ can afford to hire legal counsel and get such matters right.

I wonder were they allegedly on their way from scamming ATMs and allegedly on their way to sending millions of spam mails?
