Car revs on its own and loses power

Hi

my cars revs seems to be running a little higher than normal and this morning while sitting at the lights the revs rose up to about 3k and when i went to pull off i had very little power. I turned the car off and back on again drove for about 5 minutes and it happened again and then again twice more. Has anyone got any ideas what is wrong. Its a 2lt diesel primera

i would also like to know this.

Sometimes my car has little power when i try put more pressure on the gas.
Esp after stopping completely at roundabouts or traffic lights. Its like the car is slow to take off, otherwise i put alot of pressure to get it moving the car revs quite loud.
 
Could be a number of things:

  • Belt slippage usually results in a squeeling noise and the belt will eventually heat up and self-destruct. You may have a clutch problem if the power is not getting from the engine to the tranny. Or it can be a trans problem is something inside is worn and slipping.

  • Check the transmission fluid if it is an automatic.
    If the transmission fluid is good and it is an automatic, you will probably have to take it to a transmission shop. Very little can be done to repair an automatic without removing it from the vehicle.
    If it is a manual, have a qualified mechanic check the clutch

  • If it is a transmission problem, The longer you drive with a bad transmission,the more damage is being done to it.
 
Bring it to a garage and have it checked out. Could be engine management system or something more serious. You don't want to find out the hard way what is is.
 
Perhaps your cat con is kaput. After driving for a while, have a look underneath ....... follow the exhaust to the cat ....... if this is red/white hot then you need to get it sorted. It sounds like unburnt fuel is getting in there ....... that will keep the revs up, make it sluggish and, eventually 'weld' the insides of the cat.

I had a similar problem one time with a Punto and it was caused by a fault with engine management system.
 
Sounds like the alternator is malfunctioning. That is a common enough problem and can be solved easily (though i don't say inexpensively!) enough.
