Hi,
I live in a (very) hardwater area. If I don't invest in some sort of limescale filtration system soon its gonna cost me for a new washing machine/dishwasher etc. Does anyone have any recommendations? Can they be installed by a competent DIYer? How hard are they to install? Roughly how much do they cost?

Thanks in advance

I think this hasd been covered in some detail before but anyway:
You'll pay about €500 for a domestic softening system; they are not overly difficult to install if you have basic plumbing skills and provided your existing plumbing can be modified without too much re-piping. I'ts important that the main drinking water tap be left unsoftened.

Hi Carpenter,

In addition to being extremely "hard" the water from my well was measured at containing 7 times the normal iron content for water, hence I took the drinking water off the "softened" output, . .is this incorrect? Has this something to do with salt content of the softened water?

ALERT.

Hi Grahamo,

my water filter cost Eur2,100, supply and fit. I live in Kildare, everything's expensive here. Yours might not cost as much as you might not need to worry about the iron ike I did, .. if it's not filtered all sinks, baths, showers, clothes, teeth(!), will be stained orange in time.

ALERT.

Well, I know that it is recommended that the drinking supply is left unsoftened, it's better for (bottle fed) infants while softened water is not suitable for people with heart complaints (salt levels).
