Timing belt breakage

I was driving on the motorway the other night and my car conked out. Had it towed to a local garage who checked it and have told me that the timing belt has gone in it. They have also added that this would probably have caused immense damage to the engine but won't know until they strip it down tomorrow.

I know this could cost me serious money for repair depending how bad it is, but I wouldn't mind getting opnions on what it could cost considering I was travelling at about 65-70mph at the time. I just want to make sure I am not going to be well overcharged.

Thanks

rs2k could be right.

If the timing belt snapped the engine keeps turning for a while.

Most likley pistons have hit valves and bent valves and potentially screwed up the head.

Sorry for your trouble.

Depending on mileage/year of car it could well be uneconomical to repair - the Lanos loses value quickly.

You'll need to provide more information when was the timing belt supposed to be changed? i.e. 60k miles or every 5 yrs which every comes sooner is specified for some cars.

If you passed the recommended time and didn't change it then your looking at rebuilding the top end of the engine new belt, tensioners, water pump, new valves etc the will well over a grand and as other have said may not be economically viable.

If you changed the belt as required using genuine parts etc or the belt snapped before it was due to be changed. I would seek some of the cost from the manufacturer / dealer.

Looked up the book and apparently I should have changed it 30,000 miles ago; so I guess I have only myself to blame.

Apparently the damage is not as bad as it could have been; a couple of valves were bent and and the head suffered some damage; will cost me something in the region of €750 to repair. Was told yesterday that if the damage was bad enough it could cost me up to €1700 for repair. So I got off lightly; well I won't sing too soon until I get my car back.

Got the car back eventually today. There was some additional damage that wasn't seen initally, e.g. the coilpack had to be replaced; cost me €950 in the end. Could have been worse I suppose!!!!!

Just happy to have my car back; the last two weeks were a nightmare trying to borrow cars and public transport in my area is practically non-existent

Could have been much worse, congrats are in order.

who serviced this car in between the 30,000 miles? was it a registred Daewoo dealer? And if it was shouldn't they have been looking out for it?

No just my local garage. I actually rang them up the other day and asked how come they didn't spot the potential problem (last service was about 12 months ago). They said that it is not normal practice to change the timing belt unless asked to. Also that getting access to the timing belt to inspect it takes a lot of time and certainly wouldn't have been covered under the normal service and would have cost more. However they did say that they probably should have talked to me about it as it is a fairly old car and I had no records of the service history.

You live and learn red. pricey lesson though.

As was said it could have worse good luck with the car now on.
