Hi,

A friend who is planning to return to Ireland with her husband is considering locating in Kerry as they are priced out of the Dublin market where she originally comes from, I've been asked for advice on locations but as I have only visited Kerry for holidays I thought I'd throw it open to the expertise of the AAM's. The three towns listed are the ones they have looked into on the net, the main factors of concern are availability of work, schools (primary), entertainment and the extent of welcome / acceptance of non Irish or mixed race people into these small communities.

Thanks,
M

Re: Kerry, Listowel/Dough/Lixnaw, advice please

Hi

Kerry is one beautiful county. Like all of Ireland, these places have been introduced to immigration in recent years but numbers are small in these areas you mentioned.Listowel is the only one of those listed that is less rural. Known as a market town with basic services and famous for literary writers and theatre. Schoolswise, national schools in Lixnaw & duagh would be small communities and Listowel schools are town schools, so same issues as many towns/cities around Ireland. Listowel is a welcoming town and circa 17 miles I think to Tralee, main town in Kerry.Road trip between both towns is quick.

Tralee is a well serviced town, that you would visit often for the necessary bits and pieces.

Lixnaw is a very small community that has seen development only in recent years and especially new housing

It really depends what the family are looking for, a busy town/quiet town/village or near village life.

Thanks C-i-D,

As far as I can work out they are looking for the best of both worlds! Small community with beautiful surroundings but close enough to a town which provides shopping and entertainment! Do you know how close Duagh is to Listowel, I think its listed as Listowel by Estate Agents.

Thanks,
M

Lixnaw has just about tripled in size in the last 3 or 4 years.
Since we moved here, three new estates have been built! Many of the houses were bought by speculators and many remain empty.

It's seven miles to Listowel and 12 to Tralee.

With regards to mixed race, do they have dark skin?

We call Duagh 'Wheeeeee!' - because the main road is like a rollercoaster going down a big dip. If only they'd put a smooth surface on it, it would be great for skateboarding.

What work do they intend doing? if it's not shop-work or a trade they'll probably find it difficult. All the jobs are in Dublin.

Thanks Leghorn,
Em, yeah mixed race, half African half Irish. It would be Professional jobs Accountant / Teacher, I think they presume there would be Employment opp's within commuting distance if not in the immediate area. What if any is the impact of the vacant houses on the Community? It would explain why there are so many houses listed for such a small area I guess?
Very nosey of me..but are you a returned local or a blow-in and if new to the area how have you found it?

I live in Moyvane (might be NewTownSandes on the map), which is a small village outside Listowel. I moved there from Tralee about 6 months ago and really like it. I don't know how far it is from Listowel distance wise but it takes me 6 minutes to get there by car. I still work in Tralee and it takes me 30 to 40 minutes to get in from Moyvane. There are two new three bed semi detached developments there, which are very nice. It has a very good grocery shop, hardware store, post office, primary school, Church, there is no garage to buy petrol but there is one on the main road into Listowel. Its a nice rural area but not too far away from any major town. It is only about a twenty minute drive from Abbeyfeale also. In terms of entertainment, there are several pubs in the village, a small cinema in Listowel (which is quite good considering it is very small), not too far from Tralee which has a new Omniplex. Listowel itself has a very good theatre and I gather there are lots of plays, gigs and the like there during the winter. There is also Siamsa Tire, in Tralee, which has plays, comedy gigs, shows etc. There is a football pitch in the village also and there seems to be a good local sport vibe (although I have no interest so can't tell you much more than that!).
In relation to your question about acceptance of mixed race, I couldn't tell you but simply because I never figured it would be an issue.
I hope this helps.

Thanks,

To be honest I don't imagine as a frequent visitor to Kerry that it would be an issue either, I've just been asked and can't give an informed opinion....just hope the kids don't grow up to play against the Dubs in 10 years or so - that would be a problem lol.

Hi yes knew about the housing developments in Lixnaw, still small in comparison to Dublin ;-)

New housing developments in every village and town in Kerry these days.

Loads mentioned from posters above. All places you mentioned would have local pub scene and lots go to Tralee for the big night out on a Saturday. Also department stores and schools in Tralee, hotels, pools, gyms etc. Dance clubs, karate etc for the kids.

I'm sure Listowel could have some of these too (kids clubs etc)

Also Listowel on route to Ballybunion beach for the summer

I would seriously not worry about mixed race in my experience of Kerry.

As for work- Teaching jobs, research would be necessary as the Panel is normally large. An accountant position sounds good, so just have a look, browse kerryman and kerryseye online might be a start
