The Lockhards - "Parking attendants" on road outside Mater

I have been visitng someone a lot recently in the Mater and have noticed a few " parking attendants" on Eccles street, who seem to believe that we are incapable of parking with out their shouts of "lock hard". They then seem to want money for the helpfulness.
I have avoided where they are as I refuse to double pay to park on a public road, and I am concerned about possible vandalism.
I wonder if people have experience of not paying, and having intact paintwork? I do not want to pay the Mater car park if I can get away with it!

Usually these gangsters are gone by the time you come out anyway..
Just seem nice & politly thank them & say I'll fix you up when I get back.

If they're there that often, maybe the police would take an interest?

Usually I'd have no qualms about reporting this kind of thing.

The only problem with that is, they'd hardly arrest them (what crime have they committed?) just move them along - they would then, I think, be more likely to return shortly after and would probably take "a keener interest" in the cars around.

always on the quays at the point during concerts too. last time I was at the point they were 'asking' for €5 per car. and getting it too. More annoying outside the Mater though where I have also encountered them, especially up at the entrance to the 'old' Mater.

They used always be there around Parnell Square in high vis vests, not sure if they still are.

I have seen the police drive by these many times .. I have NEVER seen them take an interest.

Extortion/racketeering? Protection money is how the mafia in the US started out. I don't see this as anything different.

Don't get me wrong - I think it's a disgrace but I just think the Gardaí would view as no more serious than begging. Do you really think they would do anything other than move them along?

Re: "Parking attendants" on road outside Mater

I reported it outside the Point one evening when I was at a concert - the Point car park was full, so the local gougers were charging €5 per car to park locally - there were hundreds of cars parked outside, so a nice tidy sum was made, tax free. I refused, and received a rather threatening response, with both my personal safety and car being implied as targets. I reported this to a garda sargeant on traffic duty. His reply was 'Ah sure that's so and so, he's always at it.'

Extorting money out of people and threatening safety of their person and property if they refuse. Sure it'll be grand.

And you are surprised...Why??

Re: "Parking attendants" on road outside Mater

A Kerry man was up for an All Ireland final one year and parked his car around Parnell SQ when he was approached by one of these Guys to help him park he said he could manage by himself.

I'll look after your car while you are away sir,no need i brought the Dog he is sitting in the back seat.

Can he Quench Fires Sir.

avoid these Fellows they have no interest in you or your car.

Regards

Re: "Parking attendants" on road outside Mater

Blame the people who pay them. If there was no money it they would soon go away.

Re: "Parking attendants" on road outside Mater

maybe a few tax officials could go down to the point when theres a concert on ........ then again ..........
