just asking a question here

has any one got out a mortgage and when filling out where it asks about medical conditions

has any one with Ulcerative colitus , crohns (Irratible Bowel Disease )
have they paid alot more , as i understand its loaded

reason why im asking is i have got advice from 2 different sources
and one say not to mention this disease UC

i have had surgery 2 years ago - and am having more surgery next year

Re: mortage insurance with Ulcerative colitus

I am sorry I dont know specifically (and of course my sympathies for having to endure these conditions) but I have had experience (with one of our employees) where medical information regarding obesity was left off an application for insurance cover, and of course the insurance company used it as an excuse for non-payment when she was disabled for reasons that were not linked to her obesity - spinal injury from a car accident!

As far as I know you are not obliged to take your insurance out with the same comapny as your mortgage and maybe you can save some money by shopping around for the best deal? Yeah I know its a pain! Good luck!

Not admitting to medical conditions/surgery on a life assurance proposal form is madness imo and in the event of the insurance company requesting a private medical attendants report from your GP you will more than likely be found out anyway, unless your GP is prepared to corroborate your lies.

Re: mortage insurance with Ulcerative colitus

The questions on the proposal form ask about medical conditions, hospital stays and operations. The life assurance company will in all likelihood request a GP report. As you are having 'more surgery' non disclosure of medical conditions may invalidate your policy. I'm afraid you were given poor advice when you were told not to mention your condition particularly when its ongoing.

I work in this area and totally agree with what other replies say - you must fill in application form correctly, no point doing it otherwise. And your doctor is legally obliged to fill in form correctly.

HI,

I have a similar query. if you have been sent for a std screening in the past by your gp, will they refuse cover until you have had a re-test?

I have some idea at the back of my mind that a insurance company would prefer to hear that you have never been tested for stds, than to hear that you were tested irrespective of the result.

I have applied for a mortgage so i haven't made up my mind as to whether to not to disclose that i had a std test. I don't wish to get stuck with an excess or to be asked to have another test. Non disclosure seemes like a better bet particularly when considering that all std testing is supposed to be confidential and I co unlikely to ever know.

Re: mortage insurance with Ulcerative colitus

Non-disclosure is like throwing money away, because the insurance company will use it as an excuse not to pay out if anything happens. Even if the std test is confidential, it must show on your doctors records that you were referred for it and if anything happens and a claim is made on the policy you can be sure the insurance company will have access to everything in your doctors file. Declare everything and shop around.

Completely agree with Kerry - no use in even applying for ANY insurance policy unless you answer ALL the questions openly and honestly. The worst they can say is no, after all! However, it doesn't just end there. If you dont feel that any of the questions that were asked do not specifically ask for the information you thought you may have to divulge (i.e. STD etc.) you have a duty to disclose ANY and ALL material facts that you know at the time of taking out a policy (as is the case in applying for any insurance policy), as per the decleration you (should) read and sign at the end of the application.

Re: mortage insurance with Ulcerative colitus

Thanks to all

i am not intending in lying about my condition

however when i originally tried to get holiday insurance just for a trip away and when i was o ut of hospital 6 months i could'n get insurance companies to cover me at all - never mind the c ost
the only one i got was VHI Due to pre existing medical conditions clause

now that was just for a few days

I was just asking in relation to Mortage insurance as i do know non disclosure can forfeit alot of contracts
---My original question was really for any UC /crohns sufferers
who got mortages and who had surgery - did they find it difficult to obtain same
How much more loaded were the insurance say for a 200,000 mortgage

as i would expect it to be alot tougher -when the average length of a mortgage varies from 20-30 years

I see that It is only now that HIV sufferers have a certain aggreement where they get insurance and it is not as loaded

I would suggest making sure that whatever lender you choose is one that will allow you to waive your life cover if it turns out to be too expensive or you cant get it. Not all lenders allow this. It's not an ideal solution as obviously it would be better to have life cover but at least it will allow you go ahead with the house purchase.
