Ugly fireplace

I have an ugly old off-white marble fireplace in my living room. I am reluctant to go to the expense and associated hassle of replacing it. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to improve the exisiting fireplace, maybe by tiling it, or how to reduce its emphasis in the room? Am I doomed to living with it or biting the bullet and removing it?

Rip the mantel piece out altogether, plaster it over to smoothen out damage. Go for the minialistic look. Get a silver border for all around the fireplace... good luck

Hi

had this problem myself a few years ago, but with a brick fireplace. Got some large (approx 2ft x 1ft) black slate finish tiles and put these over the bricks, and also over the hearth. A nice timber mantel piece finished the whole lot off very nicely!
