Looking to buy a good SLR digital camera any advice on price etc........

Recently I used the Canon 400D and was very impressed.
It cost about €800 but should do you for a long time.
It was bought in Jessops in Dublin (nr the Molly Malone statue close to Grafton St) which was the best deal available at the time.
Jessops, an excellent camera chain, are closing that branch soon. Maybe there is a sale on.

You cannot fail with Nikon or Canon. check reviews on http://www.dpreview.com/

If you want to save some dosh, you can buy pre-owned kit. This can be done safely by going to reputable dealers. I have bought second hand lenses etc and have had no problems... touch wood.

I have just bought my daughter (Leaving Cert student hoping to do photography) a preowned Canon 350D (I bought the same camera in NYC last year) with 3 months warranty from Bermingham Cameras on Burgh Quay saving a few hundred Euro. They did me a good deal too on a camera bag, filters etc. They have a good selection of pre-owned kit at present, including a Canon 400D (updated model of the 350D). See http://www.berminghamcameras.ie/store/index.php?target=categories&category_id=207

The Dublin Camera Exchange () in Trinity Street also sell pre-owned kit, with 6 months warranty I think. Conns Cameras ([broken link removed] have a selection of pre-owned kit.

Check out too for reviews, advice, equipment for sale etc.

Ill second the 350D / 400D (newer model) I bought the 350 in april and its a great camera. Simple to use in auto mode with some fine presets and using the manual setting comes quickly aswell. Its not to big and the price isnt to bad either. The stock lens inst great (which i only realised after upgrading) but it will certainly do the job and is more than adaquate for a beginner. The sites mentioned are all halpfull aswell. I bought mine on pixmania.com and it was cheaper than anywhere here. might be worth a look.
