Any opinions on living in Dun Laoghaire?
What is the area like to live in Primary schools, amenities.
Are prices falling in that area.
How does it compare with Blackrock or other towns around. Dont think I can stretch to Dalkey or Killiney
Considering a move to the area now that prices are coming down.
Thanks

Hi lots of questions ;-)

Firstly, prices are not falling in dun laoighre. Expensive place to buy.

Facilities- dun laoighre is geat for shopping, walks, restaurants, cafes, theatre, cinema. You need to get to know area to find out good pubs and areas to avoid.

Schools are very mixed in dun-laoighre area, as school policy must enroll all types of kids in recent years. Some private schools have stricter enrollment and are expensive to enroll in.Depends what you are looking for.Catchment areas has caught on in Dublin so most insist on living within short distance of schools these days. Many send children to school on the dart line too.

Library in dun-laoighre is small which is disappointing considering size of area.

I'd widen your search area for a house and make sure you get to know surrounding areas before purchase.

Colleges have good reputation in dun-laoighre

Thanks C

Would you recommend anywhere in that area.
Is there anywhere which is good value in South Dublin?

Living near Dun Laoghaire - would disagree with the picture painted by Culchieindublin.
Economically, Dun Laoghaire seems to be going through a bad patch - quite a number of shops and pubs have shut in the recent past and the selection in existing shops is not great. Old shopping centre is being refurbished and is barely functioning. Bloomfields shopping is basically a large Tesco, and there have been a few noticable shutdowns among the other shops recently.
Cinema is good, but rest of the town is virtually deserted after 8.00pm.

I agree it is not Dundrum shopping centre or City centre shopping but most suburban areas don't have those budgets to keep going. There are transient businesses as people's desires change but do think Dun-laoighre has a nice shopping vibe to it for a suburban shopping place that you can eat out in and some nice pubs too.The shopping centre on main st (near chiurch) is undergoing a facelift but has to be done, it has clothes shops and shoe shops etc in both. Bloomfields is a large tesco mainly but also a few extra bits and a creche. Lots of interior design shops springing up all over, so money about for doing up properties. It was lovely this w/e but sure head out and have a browse to make up your own mind.

Hi Cuppa

I'm afraid no real good value in South Dublin. It is about compromise.I'd decide what you absolutely must have to survive to enjoy life, stick to a budget and keep options open for all areas around that. This may lead to South or North Dublin.

See how you go with that nice house, in good area, not too far from work and good schools and see where you end up. Best of luck!

I live nearby (Sandycove) and quite a few shops have closed recently in DL - you would hardly call it thriving at the moment! Still it's a very nice place in terms of location (you can't really beat living by the sea!), and it has a good range of amenities/services - the cinema as stated earlier, crunch fitness is a great gym if that's something you would be looking for. Somew new shops have opened recently - a new o'Briens off licence and there's a pretty big H&H bookstore.

It reminds me a bit of rathmines (but located by the sea!) - a little run down but pretty much everything you could want nearby. Transport links are an obvious plus - the DART and 46a. I would have thought house prices would be a little cheaper than Blackrock etc.

hi gravitygirl

Transport links are great (port also) and the walks are super too along promenade

I spotted a house for 1.2 million just a street up from Bloomfields, couldn't believe it! Expected about 750,000 !
