Have significant amount of sterling to exchange for Euro. Has anyone an opinion on whether now is a good time to sell or should I hold out to see what impact interest rate hike in UK might have on value of sterling in Mid May

I have the opposite problem, I have about 10,000Euro to convert to sterling. Any advice on the best way and when to do this? Am planning to use the money as a deposit on a house. Thanks.

why not the two of you meet; get buy/sell rates from Central Bank and split difference - that way, both gain.

I exchange euro to sterling regularly. I use the money exchange shops located on the border. They give much better rates than the bank. Could be worth a visit for 10K

i lodged a sterling cheque for £12,650 on 9 May in my permtsb a/c in ireland recently and got 18,195 euros in return. 0.695 rate.
i have had a little better before but am happy with this.
Luckyg, what rate did you get at the border as need to transfer more funds to ireland soon.

changed sterling to euros this week and got a rate of just under 1.46. this was in the form of a euro cheque i drew from my sterling account which i will lodge in irish account next week which usually just takes 5 days to clear. barclays charged me £20 for the service which am happy to pay. prefer to keep the money in my own hands when it is a large amount. old fashioned maybe but personal preference !

There are few things I hate more than giving money to the banks. I will be looking to buy about 30k sterling shortly. Luckily for me, my boss will be selling about 90k ... through the best means that he can find at the time.

Hi,

My mother needs to channge about 100,000 stirling to Euro. What is the best way of going about this?

Will the banks give her a better rate as it is such a large amount?

Also what is the best way from getting the money from her bank account in the north to her bank account in the south?

Thanks all.

On a slightly different angle; what is the cheapest method of exchanging between sterling and euro? I would like to send a few thousand to a UK account every six months or so.

Pokerstars!! Lodge money with credit card from Ireland. Withdraw and get cheque posted to address in England. No fees. Exchange rates are same as banks.

Just thought I would let you know what I decided to do about transferring euro into sterling.

Saw an add in the Financial Times for a company called Caxtonfx. I don't really understand how they make a profit (but they are regulated by the FSA in the UK) but they do not charge a fee and can provide a much better rate than the banks.

I did have a bit of difficulty as Bank of Ireland forgot to include my Caxtonfx reference number on the transfer documents which took a few days to sort out but overall was really happy with the service. FYI minimum amount is £5,000.

Hi Littleduck
Do you mind me asking what rate you got and what date you sent funds?

Sorry for the late reply, was busy spending!
The rate I got for Euro to Sterling was 0.67 on 14th August.

Please dont tell me if that was a bad rate:eek:

Hi Littleduck
To be honest you got a better rate than the high street bank so good work there but you definitely could have got better.

Hi gobig, how do you recommend doing it? I have a regular transfer from HSBC in sterling to BoI in euro and it's costing an arm and a leg.
