Hi - Apologies if this is the wrong forum, but I couldn't decide where exactly this query fitted..
I have an employee who is over here for a couple of months (her normal workplace is in asia, she is here for training). She has a threemonth visa, and is due to go home at the end of September.
She was wondering if I would 'allow her' to go to London for a weekend before she goes back, as it is probably the only chance she will ever get to do this.
I have no problem supporting her doing this, but I'm not sure whether she is legally able to leave the country while she is on a three-month visa. I have a feeling that she will not be able to do it, but I don't want to kill her hopes until I know for sure
I have had a look at her visa application, but I can't see any specific restrictions.......

I don't think so. A Bosnian friend of mine was originally here on a study and then work visa and with them was not allowed to travel to the UK (including NI) or elsehwere in Europe (other than back to Bosnia/[former] Yugoslavia obviously) for example. Check with the Department of Foreign Affairs perhaps as it may depend on the exact class and nature of the visa. Anything useful on [broken link removed] perhaps?

Thanks - I had already had a look at citizens information, and it doesn't make reference as to whether a visa to work in Ireland facilitates travel within the EU. My guess is that it doesn't, and your friend's experience seems to back this up. If all else fails, I'll get her to ring her embassy

I was once asked to advise a colleague in a similar situation.
You can ring the Dept of Foreign affairs and tell them her nationality and the type of visa she has and they will tell you if she can leave and re-enter the country.
She will almost definitely need a visa for the UK, which might take a while to put in place.

Surely it's the Department of Foreign Affairs that she should be calling since she is on an Irish visa and that will determine where she can go?

Check the British Home Office website. They have a list of what nationalities need visas to travel there.

However, it's a fair bet that if she needs a visa to enter Ireland, she'll need one to enter Britain.

Thanks for the replies. I've checked out with the embassy and the upshot is there is no chance of her heading to London...
I guess I better put her out of her misery....

What country in Asia is she from? I believe a chinese citizen would require a visa prior to departure, whereas a Japanese person would either not need a visa or there passport would be stamped on entering the UK
