No its not a Limerick City joke!! Seriously I am heading to Ennis during the week and any time before the traffic through Limerick city was heavy and slow. Is there any alternative route to avoid the city centre? I usually follow the Shannon Airport signs and I think I counted 10 roundabouts last time!

Re: any way to avoid limerick city?

They're still working on the last section of the bypass that will connect the N7 from Dublin through to the N18 to Ennis and Galway.

For the moment, your best bet is to turn off the N7 before you hit Limerick, follow the bypass as far as the Cork Road (N20), take the first exit to Dooradoyle (see here), turn right at the Crescent S.c. and head towards town, turn (forced) left at Lr. Mallow Street and go straight on over the Shannon bridge and out to the Ennis Road at Coonagh Cross (as here).

This looks very roundabout, but it at least allows you to miss the worst of the city centre traffic. And the city centre. ;)

If I was coming from Dublin to Ennis, I would go the Galway road as far as Loughrea, then down to Gort and on to Ennis. Loughrea is bypassed, so although you have to go into it, there should be no traffic worth talking about. Loughrea-Gort is a bad road, but the rest is fine.

I have no idea about relative distances (just more familiar with this route as often in Galway) but this route certainly avoids traffic.

drive to Nenagh, continue on direction of Birdhill, just before Birdhill ,take road to Killaloe, continue on to Tuamgraney, you then take road to Ennis.Could be delay at Killaloe bridge if you arrive there at 5.30 p.m. Otherwise road should be traffic free.

What time do you expect to arrive in Limerick?

You can sing it! God those lights are a joke. Always get caught in a major backlog of traffic in Killaloe because of those slow lights.I bet you'd have time to go into Goosers for a dinner and the lights would not have changed when you get out!

what part of Dublin are you driving from? It will make a difference.
Whether you want to go the N4 out or the N7 out.

If its the N7 I would go the Dr's route, if its the N4, go MOB's route.
If you go the N7, get a map out and go the route around Mountrath as there are major traffic works going on

thanks folks - plenty of options there! I will be leaving Dublin tuesday about 1pm heading out from south city,so both N4 and N7 are grant. hoping to get to Ennis by fiveish. I just hate sitting in traffic when nearly there. Thanks again folks:) - getting the maps out to study now!!

Hi TB, If I was you I'd head down the N7 to Birdhill (just over 2 hrs from the Red Cow) - don't turn off until you're exiting the village and take the right turn after "Matt the Treshers" pub/resturant heading for Montpelier & O'Briensbridge.

Pass through the village of O'Briensbridge and over the canal, go straight thro' at the crossroads towards Broadford. In Broadford head to Kilkishen, in Kilkishen head up to Tulla, then onto Ennis.

Some of the roads are narow but traffic should be moving all the time.

HTHs

I recommend you stop at Matt The Threshers for the Crab claws and home made burger.....delicious
