Hi all,

First posting, longtime viewer.

Currently living and working in Kilcock, got my ideal job offer after X years.
Not interested in commuting, getting married next year-no kids yet.

Anybody any thoughts on Longford Town, had a look around, seems fine.
However some pals of mine have gave me some pretty negative comments regarding the town,.

Question::
I wish to live near the town, any areas to look for and most importantly any areas to avoid. Any views on the pros and cons of my plan are greatfully appreciated.

Re: Longford-good or bad area?

Hi There
Well I moved to a small village about 7 miles from the town. Its the Sligo side as opposed to the Dublin side. And honestly its the best move we ever did. There are some other threads about it and other thoughts etc.But if you want a place that its easy to walk into the town then look around on the outskirts as there really is no public transport. Will you be commuting to Kilcock? If not then there really is a few nice places to live around here. But again my opinion. But what kind of lifestyle are you looking for as that will factor in where's the best place to recommend to you.If you post some more info I will give you my 2p worth! I am here nearly 9 months now so feel i can give a little advice. Not as much as a true local of course!!;)

Re: Longford-good or bad area?

Thanks Tylerdylan,

Will be working in Longford, looking for somewhere within around 2 mile outside of town. Had a look at some houses but they seem pretty remote, what are the new estates like around the town? Would prefer something with some degree of privacy so am also looking at more settled areas just not sure about the areas hence the post.

Re: Longford-good or bad area?

Have only driven through Longford so can't really comment.

But on a more sour and probably unjust note, wasn't Longford town voted the 'worst town in Ireland to live in' a year or two ago?

Can't remember the details of the survey or whatever it was - have to admit, from what I've seen of Longford it looks ok to me though.

Re: Longford-good or bad area?

Dromod or Roosky are about 15 mintues from Longford and both are very nice little villages ..particularly Dromod.

Tarmonbarry/Termonbarry is a little village outside Longford which is about 6/7 miles away as well, 5/10 minute drive......its a very nice sleepy village..i think its county roscommon though.

Regards

Re: Longford-good or bad area?

I am in a small estate and have great privacy, but its more than 2 miles from town.I personally think you are better looking on the sligo side as opposed to the dublin side .Clondra has some new estates and its small and very quite as is Tarmonbarry. They are both real easy to get into Longford town. And of course Killashee is my favourite!Even Newtown Forbes have some new estates and old. There would be quite near to town.Where have you already looked eddyboy?
Hope this helps?

Didn't hear that, but I'd like to hear more about the criteria used and the statistical significance of the survey before I'd lend any weight to the results. A canvas of one person still qualifies as a vote!

I live in Longford town myself, and having lived in three other Irish towns I find the place to be very friendly and open to outsiders.
Shopping facilities are quite good and a lot of new shops have opened up in the past few years. There's a reasonable selection of things to do in your spare time.

Not too sure about job prospects though... I'm commuting to Dublin myself.

I would advise the OP to be careful with the new "Section 23" type housing estates... there's a glut of these houses on the market, and a lot of them remain unoccupied, or are bought in bulk by investors and rented out under the "Rent Allowance Scheme".
As a result the estates tend to be unsettled, and you could be in for problems with tenants.
Probably a better bet to stump up some extra cash and go for a more mature development... if you're living in town, there are some nice areas on the main roads leading to Dublin and Sligo.

never said there was anything wrong with Roscommon....was only stating that although Termonbarry is very close to Longford it is actually County Roscommon.

Tarmonbarry is partly in Longford and Roscommon, the Shannon is the divider. Same in Lanesboro and Rooskey

IN relation to OP, Longford has seen a surge in development in recent years due to tax designation.
A lot of the newer developments are under occupied or are rented

Stick to the outskirts of the town, and not in an estate

Take a geography lesson, Charlie C. Actually, the Shannon does not divide Rooskey between Roscommon and Longford. Rooskey is divided between Roscommon and Leitrim.

wouldnt disagree with that

eddyboy, longford is a great place to settle. every town in ireland has a rough element, so what - that's life ! - its still a way lot better than where i live in London !!
there is a nice little crescent up the Battery Road out of Longford Town, cant remember the name of the road you turn off (begins with an A). in fact, there are two developments there worth looking at, one is beside Longford tennis courts. both devs are half way up the battery road. these are the best spots if you want to be near the town but will pay a bit more for this.
otherwise, there are some good looking houses in kenagh about 8 miles from longford and a good road out to it. killashee is grand but kenagh has much more going on and over the next few years lots of plans to improve all the local amenities. lots of nice walks round Mosstown, Coolnahinch, Lime Tree Avenue, the Royal Canal, Corlea Heritage Centre, Mosstown Riding School etc. 3 pubs (always bands on at the weekend), 2 grocers, blinds shop, electrical store, good national school, very active GAA and other community activities, good creche in village, two churches, one restaurant, post office and a new petrol station about to be built.
what more can i tell you ? and if your clever and play your cards right, i would bet you could buy a good size house for a good price with the way the property market is looking at the moment ?!

Hi Eddyboy,
As a resident I can tell you there are good and bad parts. Avoid Pauric Colum Heights, MacEoin Park ... and surrounding areas and you should be okay.
There are hundreds of houses in Longford ... most built under Section 23 type rural renewal scheme. My advice would be if you want to live in a town ... live in the town, I don't see any benefit to being 6 or 8 miles outside a town - you'll be totally car dependant! As lorna mentioned, the best area of town is undeniably the Battery Road - anything close to it should be a safe bet. There is a beautiful estate at the end of Abbeycartron Lane but it's nearly all sold, failing that there is Battery Court - doesn't float my boat but the address is good.
As towns go, Longford is grand. You will find everything you need here - the new pool opens this week. There are no shortage of supermarkets, Tesco, Supervalu, Aldi and Lidl - there is a new Dunnes Stores opening in the Autumn, and what I think is a Superquinn too. The cinema is good - the pubs are grand and the locals are friendly.
Best of luck whatever you decide.

Many thanks to all for your responses, I am looking at the newtownforbes area, close to town, nice houses.

Many Thanks again to all

With regards to Newtonforbes, check out the situation with the water supply.

I heard in the past the mains supply was a bit dodgy and council would often have to turn it off for works on it.
This was a good while ago I heard that but I never heard that it got sorted.
