My wife and I are travelling to Oz for 6 months in Oct. 1 month in Perth,
3 1/2 months on east coast and 1 month in NZ.Anybody ever used Big4
cabins or hostels? Would like to hear from anyone who has done this.
Should we rent or buy car? I would appreciate any suggestions.

My brother went to oz for 3 months a few years ago. Arrived in Perth and bought a car advertised in a local paper for 600euro. He drove the length and breath of oz for the three months and obviously did thousands of miles. Sold the car in Sydney for bout 400euro before flying home. 200euro for a car for 3 months is a pretty good deal. Buying definitly the way to go.

If travelling north up east coast check out the backpackers car market in Kings Cross Sydney. Plenty of cheap vans and cars (usually with camping equipment etc) for sale there. Everything on sale needs to be vetted by garage beforehand and seller will have list of faults etc so get fair idea of what getting. If going for an older vehicle recommend going something like a 4 litre like a ford falcon or holden commodore as they've probably taken the punishment they're usually dealt by backpackers better than say a 1.8 japanese import. Love to be back there, Enjoy!

Your brother got great value. Is it a bit risky driving an old car like that
given the large barren unpopulated areas of Australia? Is it also true that its hard to sell on a car in one state if registered in another?
I've heard that theres good value in Sydney where cars are concerned.
With regard to accom we're probably travelling at a more expensive
time coming into summer.

If possible try to travel in a convoy in case you break down. Also, make sure you avoid watching Wolf Creak!!!
