Slow BT Broadband

Hello,
When I got the 1Mb broadband from BT back in December my download speeds were about 700-850 kbps and were fine for a few months. However for about the last 6-8 weeks the download speeds have gone down to 400-450 kbps. I am getting these speeds at different times weekdays and weekends.. I have tried some checks ( disconnecting everything else from the phone lines, removing filters, but no change). I am connected to the Ballincollig exchange in Cork. Has anyone else experienced a slowdown in Bt speeds recently?

My line stats are as follows (taken 9.45 pm mon)

noise margin upstream: 15 db
output power downstream: 0 db
attenuation upstream: 28 db

noise margin downstream: 24 db
output power upstream: 15 db
attenuation downstream: 50 db

WAN port stats Upstream speed 128kbps
Downstream speed 576 kbps

Thanks.

What contention ratio applies? Perhaps it's simply a case of more people being online and splitting the available bandwidth?

Hi Clubman,

The contention ratio is 48:1. I could understand if the speed was dropping in the evening time when things get busy. But I am getting these speeds in the morning, afternoon etc. Also this has been going on for 5-7 weeks. One thing I've noticed is that very occasionally the speed will jump to what I would expect. For example, yesterday morning at 11.00 am the D/L speed was 797kbps. However when I checked again at 1.30 pm It was back to 447 kbps!

Thanks.

Hi,

Could anyone explain what the values I quoted in my original meessage mean before I call BT.At least then I might have some idea what's wrong beforehand.

thanks.

It looks to me as if you have a poor line, you should be getting 1mb easily enough unless you are a long way from the exchange. Could be anything, water in the cabling somewhere, crosstalk interference from another DSL line, dodgy wiring in your house etc. Talk to BT, they may be able to get Eircom to come and look at the line.

Sorry I might not have phrased this too well! What I meant was what is the significace of the numerical values I quoted. In other words what range of numbers which indicate a good or a faulty line?

Thanks.
