Thinking of going next summer as part of a 2 week round to world trip (Fiji for the beach, the rest of the time we will be in cities).

Is it worth going or are there better alternatives in that part of the world?

Looking at 'luxury' type resorts.

Was there a couple of years ago on a stop over to Australia

Dont stay on the main island if you want beaches go to one of the outer islands. Cannot remember which one as we only stayed a night but beaches are fantastic

Would recommend it

Was there 3 years ago as a so called gucci-backpacker, in that I wasn't looking to rough it but didn't want to spend a fortune. The outer islands are definitely the place to head to, went to the Yasawas, which you can get to using the Yasawa Flyer, a ferry that visits all of these islands on a daily basis, making island hopping relatively easy. It is remote in that you won't have internet/phone access when out there (unless things have changed dramatically), but definitely the most relaxing experience I ever had, after 2 days I had completely forgotten the office and all its stresses. The Fijian people are extremely friendly. There is a good mix of high end sky-is-the-limit luxury and mid price $50 per night. Accommodation on these islands is usually in what is known as a 'bure' i.e. a little wood cabin for 2 people.

If you are looking for luxury, avoid Beachcomber Island, which is overrun with backpackers. Also avoid spending time in the capital Nadi, which is a bit of a dump.
The Thorn Tree forum on lonelyplanet.com is a great place to pick up information on resorts, prices etc.

Have a great time

Interesting looking at going Next april from OZ flying into Fiji from Sydney for 5/6 days. Anyone been since is Nadi bad as really don't have any idea about the place.

I was in Fiji back a few years ago...things may have changed, but I'd agree, there's very little in Nadi.

If you're happy hanging out with backpackers, I'd consider looking into The Feejee Experience - its a 'kind of' guided tour in that you can stay at each destination as long as you like, they have a pick up every day or two at most stops, so you move on when it suits you. You get to see some more traditional villages, meet kids at a local school etc.. and they have well run activities like natural mud baths/tubing down a river and the like!
The accomodation tends to be back-packer(y) though, which might be a consideration. We had a middle aged couple on most of our trip and they LOVED it!!

If you are going on a 2-week round the world trip you won't see much
besides airports. 2 weeks is not a long time to see even a fraction of Fiji
never mind the world. There are over 300 islands that make up Fiji alone.

Anyway, if you have the time, my recommendation would be to head East
after flying into Nadi and head for Suva. Suva is the capital by the way not
Nadi. From Suva get a boat out to Levuka and stay in the Royal Hotel in
Ovalau. It's old and quaint but it's really nice and there are not very many
tourists there. Very reasonably priced and the locals are really nice.

The Mamanuca's and Yasawas are lovely aswell but more back-packer
oriented. If your staying for only a night or two these might be easier to get to though. Anyway, enjoy...it's a wonderful part of the world!

I am not doing a round the world trip - going down to see inlaws for a few weeks in OZ will be my fourth time so done oz, they are more interested in seeing the kids so generally go for a little getaway without the kids last time we went for a week around the South Island of NZ, this time looking at going to Fiji. Might look at the Feejee experience and look to go to Suva. Prefer to see places to sitting on the beach kind of holidays. So any other suggestions I would welcome them.
