Hi
I have a Creative MP3 player which I have been unable to connect to my Laptop for the past months. I have tried different USB keys but for some reason it does not connect to my laptop. It used to read it immediately but now it doesnt. I tried to upload the CD again but this caused an error. When it is pluged in using the USB key it looks like its "charging" the MP3 but nothing happens even when left for hours. All my music and more is stored on Windows media player but now I cannot upload any new music. I can luckily charge my MP3 using my docking station but now much good for travelling.

The only issue I can see it being was that at xmas I bought my nephews and MP3 player ea and I uploaded music from my PC on to their MP3's (much simpler versions than mine). Would it because the PC is confused over the MP3 ?

Any help would be greatful cause I am getting "bored" with the music on my MP3......

Do you mean that other USB devices are picked up by the specific USB port you connect the MP3 player? If they don't then it may be the port that is not working.

If the charging icon appears on screen then I would expect the port is working, at least it is providing power.

Since your player is playing music it appears to be functioning correctly but it may be worthwhile following the Creative recovery mode that allows you to format you MP3 player and reload the firmware.

Other than that check if it is picked up by a different PC.

Have you tried updating/reinstalling the firmware? You can download it from the Creative web site. (it worked for mine)

Sorry Clubman - What I mean is that this is my work labtop and it was upgraded so they replicated all my files onto the new one. I believe that this is when the issue started happening.
The USB Ports continue to work for other items without any issue.

Thanks Foofan. Would I not loose everything on the MP3 if I reload the firmware

Sounds like the drivers/host software may not installed at all or properly on the new laptop especially if attempting to reinstall crashes as you seem to suggest earlier. Not sure how they replicated your files from one laptop to another but when doing this you have to be careful not to create mismatches. Were the old and new laptops identical hardware configurations and did they do a low level clone of the drive or something?

Yes it was but all the stuff was copied from old one onto it. Would this matter?

Does the new computer have Vista (rather than XP)?

If so, the problem is that the creative software doesn't work with Vista automatically. You'll have to download a patch from the Creative site and this will wipe what is on your MP3 player at the time.

As part of the rescue/recovery steps you format all before reloading the firmware. This does indeed wipe your MP3 player so you need everything backed up.
But it sounds like your MP3 player is working, well it's playing music so that pretty much means it's working!!

Sounds to me that 'copying' the file system to the new laptop has caused some issue in the software (unless it is a Windows version issue). Try uninstalling the software, deleting all files and registry entries relating to the Creative software.
You will need someone who knows how to modify the registry to do so as you still want your laptop to work!!
Then reinstall.

Until you establish what player it is, and what software/drivers it needs, and what OS its running on, its impossible to know what the problem is.

It may be that the laptop has a newer version of windows media player, and it needs updated drivers.
