What are the main differences between the North and South of the island?
I'm looking for somewhere non high rise, more picturesque with more of an old town village like atmosphere with Spanish food rather than egg and chips.:)

The south of the island tends to have warmer weather. There are loads of lovely little resorts on the south of the island. Los Christianos is a nice resort. It is about 20 min walk from the madness of playa de las americas however on the los Christianos side of americas it is very classy, very clean and fabulous restaurants so if you wanted to take a stroll for dinner its very nice.

Hi,

for what you are looking for, I would recommend the north side of the island.
The south is much more touristy (even though as Sammie pointed out, Los Cristianos is nicer than Playa de las americas).

I went to Puerta de la Cruz in the north of the island, and really enjoyed it. It's a village with lots of hotels and restaurants etc, but still doesnt feel very touristy (i.e. no 'all day breakfasts' etc). It has a nice plaza in the middle, with restaurants nearby.
We hired a car and drove along the north of the island, passing through litle villages and very remote landscape. It was beautiful and changed my perception of the canary islands.

I've heard that the north is a bit more cloudy than the south (due to Mount Teide), but the weather was still fabulous.

Cheers,
Ragazza.

If you are concerned about touristy areas and high rise I'm sort of surprised you are even mentioning Tenerife.

Have you considered other islands in the Canaries? La Palma, La Gomera & El Hierro are almost untouched but may be a little awkward/expensive to get to. Parts of Lanzarote and especially Fuerteventura are relatively unspoilt too - in fact pretty much anywhere outside of the main resorts in these two islands would be very típico.

Thats quite true, i have heard that the north of the Island is alot less touristy. However if you were going mainly for the weather then you may consider a quieter part of the south. I have been going to Tenerife for years and love it - its not all party party as people seem to think because of the Veronicas Area.

The other islands in the canaries possibly don't have as favourable a climate as south tenerife. Lanzarote for example can be very cloudy and there is quite a strong wind too. It really depends on whether or not you want more chance of good sunshine all year round. Hope you have a nice holiday wherever you end up :)

With cheaper Ryanair flights now available I just wanted to put together my own tailored package as a filler holiday.

Have you thought about Malta? Ryanair/aer lingus (not exactly sure which) fly to Malta and it is really nice. I'm sure it has the same touristy areas as all holiday destinations but if you do some research on the web you could find a place that isn't taken over with tourists.
