N.C.T. do I need it?

I have a car that was brought over from England. Now I paid the money to bring it in and change the plates in to Irish and so on. It had a m.o.t. on it till this month and now that's up. The car is taxed and insured, do I really have to n.c.t. it??
I may change the car at christmas and I think it's going to cost a lot to get it through an n.c.t. so I rather not!!
What happens if I get stopped?
I know the n.c.t. people don't have the details of the car so it won't be called unless I take it in and bring the reg cert.
What you think should I chance it??

The car details are automatically sent to the NCT despite what they say. I was told I had to bring my car reg documents to an NCT centre for them to log it and then the next day to call and make an appointment. I wasn't impressed at having to make a trip to an NCT centre just so they could read a form I hand in my hand so I left it a while. However I still got a NCT notice for the car about a week after paying the VRT so obviously I didn't need to inform them myself, the Revenue database people must do it.

All that said, if the car if over 4 years old you are legally obliged to have an NCT cert, your insurance may be invalid and the Gardai can fine you. MOT's are irrelevant in Ireland.
 
You can get 5 penalty points on conviction - chances are you might not get that if summonsed - the judge might well go easy on you and maybe the guard that stops you might just warn you. Then again, you never know.
 
Where does it say 5 penalty points for having no NCT.As far as I'm aware
a traffic warden can issue a fine if no NCT is displayed.
 
If the N.C.T. people are aware that you have imported this car and have not yet requested you to report for a check why rush it wait until they make an appointment for you.

The car must be NCT'd by the 4th anniversary of when first registered anywhere (even if in UK). When you re-register your car in Ireland, the system records the original registration date which would be on the paperwork you have to submit when re-registering; the number plate also matches the original registeration year. All the details are automatically sent to the NCT system and you would have to have it done on time. Also when your tax is up on the first time after the NCT due date, you will not be able to renew it until the NCT is passed.

Of course a court appearance doesn't necessarily mean a conviction...
 
Aside from the legal arguements if you have comphensive insurance and you have an accident your insurance company may resist paying out, the third party will be looked after but the settlement to you may be put in jeopardy. Most policy documents say that the vehicle needs to be road worthy, so your only giving the insurance company a stick to beat you with by not having your NCT

I had a look at that website, no convictions as yet for anybody driving without an NCT. It doesn 't seem to be listed either in current penalty point offences. the reason why I harping on about this ,I have never seen a gardai bothered about an NCT cert as long as the car looks in a decent condition no apparent defects, e.g lights gone, or worn tyres etc.
 
that webpage is kind of scary however seems to be a lot of people out there prepared to take a chance. think the nct has lost a lot of credability in the last couple of years
