Retro-fitting ventilation-grilles or window vents?

My architect just came out to review our extension before certifying it meets the building regulations and planning permission. All is well bar one item – ventilation. We need to add ventilation in three rooms.

Options seem to be either drilling holes in walls and fitting ventilation grills (not the prettiest), or retro-fitting trickle vents into the frames of the white uPVC windows.

Does anyone have any thoughts on vents built into the window frames? If anyone knows a company that does them (company I got the windows from don’t do them) and will retro-fit, I’d appreciate any info.

just to clarify my thinking on this for a new build, if we buy windows with vents then we do not need to put the vent holes in our walls ? is this correct as i would much rather do the window route for ventilation ?

Yes, according to the engineer that certified my house. What matters is the size of the ventilation area, not how it is achieved.

If you fit even a basic ventilation system, then you don't need either vents or grilles. Trickle vents are, at the best of times.......fickle.

Fickle Trickle, LOL, did I just say that?

i would suggest going for airtight construction with a basic heat recovery ventilation system installed... shouldnt cost you any more than €5,000 for a decent unit....
