Hi,
were having a cocktail party in August and were having alot of trouble finding lime juice.Do pubs use actual lime juice or do they use lime cordial. If its lime juice does anyone know where i can get some?
Also, some of the cocktails need sweet+sour mix.Where could I get my mitts on that? I've tried offies and they dont stock it.
any help will be apprecieated.

As far as I know, pubs usually use lime cordial - you'll probably have to just buy some limes and squeeze them..... As for sweet/sour mix, why not make your own? A combination of (cider/wine) vinegar, honey and/or sugar might do the trick.....;)

I don't think I'ver ever seen actual lime juice (as opposed to cordial) other than Jif - the squeezy lemons that is - they also do squeezy limes but they are not as common.

Tesco sell bottles of lime juice, just like bottles of lemon juice. Cheap and cheerful and in the baking section beside the jif lemon juice.

I have seen a range of cocktail mixes for sale in several shops, most recently Superquinn, sutton. They do pre-mixed flavours (like daiqauiri, margarita ect.) that you just add the alcohol to. They also so a sweet and sour mix. I think the range is called 'finest call' or something similar.

Only thing for cocktails is Rose's lime. That and Gordon's Gin ("the heart of a good cocktail"). Ahhhh....

I think strictly speaking Rose's is a cordial, but it's OK to use undiluted (taste is pretty natural, unlike some).

My personal favourite is 1/2 each of Gordon's and Rose's for a Gimlet. If you change it to 1/3 each and add sparking water as the 3rd, you have a nice long drink (well, longish - it's still pretty potent!).

You can get Rose's from supermarkets (certainly Superquinn): I believe it's what the professionals use.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose's_lime_juice

'Sweet and Sour mix'

Isn't it just 'Sour' mix?

I've never seen it around myelf, but would be interested if anyone has seen it (other than Superquinn Sutton)?

If you're in Dublin then why not just drop into the fruit and veg wholesale market off Mary's Abbey, buy a crate of limes and squeeze them?

Only thing is you get considerably less juice from a lime than you do from a lemon. If you're making large quantities, you might need a helluva lot of limes...

BTW, tried some of these cocktail mixes (not necessarily the above mentioned ones) and I found them to be almost undrinkable - horribly synthetic and overly sweet - not a patch on the real thing

Angustarro bitters is a branded sours mix ( not sweet + sour ).

Lime juice should be got from squeezzing limes its not that bad, no cocktail I can think of requires too much of it - sure it would be impossible to drink.

I was at a party last week and made Mojitos til castro came home, all from squeezed limes. Its the syrup mix thats the secret for these...
