We got our new lawn finished last week. It's about 3/4 of an acre so I will need a ride on lawnmower. I'm looking for any advice on where to go, what to buy and how much should I expect to pay. What should I be looking for? Are the B&Q ones any good? I asked about them in the Naas shop but the guy did not know much. He said that they have not sold 1 since the shop opened. Thats not a good sign is it?

Best advice, if you have kids, is to make sure that they stay well away when you are cutting.

I know one father who clipped three toes off his three year old daughter.

Which did neither of them any good.

Hubby has a John Deere ride on and he loves it. Its 6yrs old & gets "Dogs Abuse" and has never given an ounce of trouble. It was about £6000 Irish when we bought it and it was well worth every penny.

It is both a bagging system and a mulcher, but he mostly uses the bagging system. It has twin bags on the back which he can lift off and empty into the compost heap.

He takes off the deck and uses it as a mini tractor drawing trailer loads of stone and sand and anything else he can get into it! The trailer that he bought for it is equivalent to 3 wheelbarrows.

He had a roller made, and bought a scarrifier and moss rake (huskavarna) and is now looking for a sweeper for the driveway!

Boys and their toys!:p

john deere are a very good machine but are a bit pricey for domestic use, SIMPLICITY are the best domestic mower i have seen and used and give a lovely finish, They are more expensive than the likes of honda and castlegarden and b&q's stuff but well worth it over the long term.

Jim Hanley farm machinery, Ashford Co. Wicklow are the agents

trouble and is excellent at collcecting grass even when greass is damp expect to pay ataround 2500 approx,,,,,,,,,

I have had a Castlegarden tractor mower for about 6 years and have had no trouble with it at all.Its also very good at collecting the grass even when grass may be damp.Expect to pay around 2500 which isnt really that bad as in real terms they havent gone up that much over the years........

I've had several ride-on and walk-behind mowers over the last few years,i'm in the business, and have to say the Honda/CastleGarden (they are both the same, just re-badged) are the best.
Have had Hayter,Ariens,John Deere,Simplicity,Husquavarna and Oleo-Mac mowers in the past.
My advise is to spend as much as you possibly can, within reason of course,as I have seen alot of people buying these ride-ons from B&Q and Co-Ops,and you get what you pay for, junk. You would be far better off buying a good walk-behind mower that these, honestly.
Go to a reputable dealer who will look after you when things go wrong,as I say a honda or castlegarden, 15hp+,40 inch cut+,you could get a good second hand for resonable money with a warranty, possibly around 1900euro,far better value than those B&Q yokes
