Smart Broadband - any P2P restrictions?

Re: Smart - Broadband

I'm not sure what exactly you mean, but I have smart broadband and although my connection is very fast, I can rarely download from Limewire. So maybe you're referring to a similar problem?

Re: Smart - Broadband

Some ISPs presumably have tehcnical or AUP restrictions on certain uses such as P2P. the terms & conditions of the service agreement should clarify whether or not this is the case.

Cian, your problems downloading from Limewire may not be due to Smart Telecom P2P blocking or regulations. I have Smart and regularly download television shows with no problem. You may want to check out on your system or see what else might be causing the problem.

I really must, especially since I forked out for Limewire pro! I'll eventually get around to sorting it.

Re: Smart - Broadband

Some evenings I find my broadband with Smart is just crawling, too slow to use
Other times it zips

What could be the reason, what affects the speeds ? Does overall traffic affect the speeds, would one of my neighbours using my connection affect the speed ?

I have the same issue. So much for their waffle about their being no contention!

Is there any P2P restrictions with this provider?

Even if there was i'm sure you could use your-freedom.net to bypass the firewalls. But as CM said it may violate the AUP:(

Why don't you just use the free P2P programs? I've never heard of ppl paying for p2p, unless you just want to do it legally?
What do you mean No Contention

Do you think it is a problem with Smart Telecom ?
I assume No Contention means a ratio of 1:1?
My broadband sometimes slows down, VERY slow especially when i have had it running for long periods (like overnight).
But a simple power-cycle usually fixes this, i.e. pull the plug out, wait 30+ secs and plug in again.

Contention is where you share your local broadband 'line' with other users - often up to 48 other users. If all 48 are online at the same time, the speed of each individual user's connection slows correspondingly. It happens a lot at peak times e.g. early evening etc.

I seem to remember Smart claiming that their broadband doesn't have contention problems because they use different technology or something - I have no idea really, perhaps someone with more techie knowledge can explain?!
