Hi

I have a yearly VHI insurance and going away again to europe in a few days. Do i need an E111 form or will my travel insurance cover what i need..... I was away earlier this year and didn't apply for it but everyone keeps talking about it....

Thanks

EHIC & E111 were never intended to replace travel insurance. Any half-decent travel insurance policy will cover a lot more than the basic access to public hospitals that is guaranteed by the EHIC.

These are two different questions! EHIC is not a substitute for more general insurance (e.g. via your private health/travel insurance policy). Whether or not your private health/travel insurance covers the same things as the EHIC depends on the policy.

Ok so basically the EHIC form is only good for the things that my private insurance doesnt cover?

Not necessarily - they are usually different horses for different courses. EHIC is for free public health care. Private travel/health insurance may cover more than just that. Read the details of the EHIC, private health insurance and travel insurance to check what each covers.

I believe essentially that the EHIC / E111 covers you for whatever public health care is available to citizens any other EU country in their own country.

What the EHIC/E111 will not cover you for would be repatration costs etc. in the event of a serious accident.

Also it obviously wouldn't cover you for things like delays/ cancellation / baggage that travel insurance would typically cover.

As the EHIC is free and takes very little effort to obtain, you should get one. I have heard anecdotal evidence that if you need to go to A&E in a EU country, the EHIC can make life very easy. Private travel insurance is also a very good idea , but who wants to have a hospital administrator look for evidence of what exactly you are covered for in the middle of an emergency.
