I'm returning to Ireland after a few years in the USA with my wife and 3 young children to take a job near in North Co Dublin. Navan seems like a logical place to settle given the pricing and location. Can people please advise what the Town is like ? Is it a nice place to live ? Where should we avoid ? What is a good primary school ? Are the amenities in the area good ? How long a commute is Dublin airport...really ?

Any help hugely appreciated.

Re: Moving to Navan, Meath

Hi there, we moved to Navan from Dublin many years back now and presently live in the Athlumney Area. The local amenities here are coming on stream now as there was a burst of housing estates here starting on 2000.We have really settled as have the children, the roads where not great to begin with but have improved greatly and more on stream. The new N2 has a 120kmph speed limit. The communte to the airport will be hassle free and you will only meet one set of lights ( Kilshane Cross, back of airport ) if you are to be located the dublin side of Navan. I get to the m50 in 30 - 35 mins so you should be around the same. Getting around Dublin in the morning can be a nightmare but you will not have to contend with that being located in the airport.I personally prefer the country schools as opposed to the town ones the likes of Cannistown and Lismullin being my favourites and have very good reputations, there is a school in Athlumney but it is not permanent accommodation at the min. You will surely get more value for your money and space here, I know there are other Navan dwellers here that will offer further advice, the best of luck

Re: Moving to Navan, Meath

Living in Navan for the past 40yrs. Two other primary schools with good reputations would be St. Paul's Primary School (my own children go there) and St. Oliver's Primary School. Both schools are in the town. Re amenities strong gaelic clubs catering for all ages O'Mahony's (where our own allegiances lie), Simonstown, Bective within the Navan parish. It you could be a bit more specific about what kids interests are I can let you know about local clubs (too many to start listing here), athletics, swimming, karate, irish dancing, golf, etc. etc. Traffic congestion is by far the biggest problem in Navan. A total nightmare at times but if you living in town itself most of the amenities are within walking distance. If you want to give me a bit more detail about what specifics you want will be happy to do so.

Thanks for the replies, very encouraging. I have 3 kids ages 1 to 6. My eldest is a boy and we need to get him into Snr Infants...the response from schools so far has been poor to downright rude..."No we're Full" with no offer of help.
The activities sound like any other irish town which is great. Is the leisure complex a good standard ?
I will try Lismullen, Cannistown is full as is St Olivers.
Do you use the N2 or N3 to get to Dublin Airport. What is the road to Cavan like...my work will also have me travelling just over the county border in Cavan...Is it far from Navan.
Appreciate the help.

Jackie Skellys gym opened last year in the Johnstown/Athlumney area and has a pool etc, the N2 is the best and most direct route for the airport taking the Kentstown road to meet the N2 itself, I am not too familiar with the road to Cavan myself but you are centered quite well for both, it is a pity that the schools have not been more encouraging not sure they are handling the growing demand with manners :)

p.s. Lismullen is a country school and is not in Navan town and you will need to drive to it, it does however operate a bus service for drop off pm

Do you know of any good schools out the kingscourt road or the "other" side of Navan. My wife will be heading that way and we could easily hit a school in that direction. Ideally I would be very keen to hear of any other schools you could recommend in the general area.

Thanks

You would have Wilkinstown National School (046-9054329). Don't know anything about it other than it is a small country primary school. Did you try St. Paul's Primary School (046-9028754)? While I appreciate you have no choice but to look further afield for schools for the children keep in mind that for the kids to integrate fully into the town it would be more ideal for them to be attending schools in the town and making friends from within their own area. But as I said I appreciate that you have little choice.
