Travelling to Dublin by train on a Friday afternoon, returning Saturday afternoon. Just wondering is it worth the extra €23 on top of the €50 price for a return ticket to travel Premier class. €23 might not sound too much but when there are 2 travelling the difference is between €100 or €140 total cost of tickets... is it worth it? No problem paying it if it is worth it!

Premier Class is 1 st Class travel. You get special seats as far as I am aware on a 1st Class carriage incl special treatment on the train by special staff

Having travelled to Cork first class once, I would say absolutely no way - unless the Limerick route is vastly superior. It is hugely overpriced for what you get (which, in case you were wondering, is the same sh*tty Iarnrod Eireann service and attitude from the staff, but made all the harder to take knowing you're paying double for the privilege).

It is the same route as far as I know. If you change at Limerick Junction you get on the train coming from Cork.
Thanks, that is all I wanted to know. Though if my husband sees bunny girls through the window of the 1st class carriage he will be very upset!

Married to Wonder Woman, and he wants bunny girls to serve him on the train to Dublin? He must have a powerful appetite... :)

Most trains from Limerick are Dublin direct - only in some cases, you join the Cork train at Limerick Junction.

No way. Same lousy service, just a few quid more out of your pocket. You don't even get a newspaper.

I wouldnt recommend it . The journey isnt even long enough to enjoy it if it was any better.

City Gold yes, Premier Class no. Think CG is only to Cork though, IMO that's worth it not to having screming kids or rowdy gangs in the carriage as the carriage is exclusive. Premier is only half a carriage and anyone else can be in the other half.

Used to travel quite frequently on the train for work and often booked the first class ticket for one reason only- if the train was going to be very full to the point where I might not get a seat. I often travelled at commuting times and Friday evenings when the train was often overcrowded. You are guaranteed a seat with the first class. Rest of benefits didnt bother me one way or other- you get waiter service if you want it and are isolated from the plebs in ordinary class. LOL.

Or another way of looking at it is you're isolated with a different bunch of overpaying plebs :p LOL

Well, booked premier class for the train to Dublin as it is direct from Limerick, cost 11.50 each extra. Have booked Standard for the return journey as the train goes to Limerick junction first to change there, so very short journey. Train into Limerick has only standard class. So will let you know Monday my thoughts! (though I know in my heart I have wasted my money!)

In my experience, first class travel on trains is nothing special. I can't comment on the Iarnoid Eireann trains, but I have travelled on the Belfast - Dublin Enterprise several times and a few times I did go in First Class.

Seats are a bit more comfy and you get a nice light at the window. But that is it. You don't get meals or anything included. Normal class is more than sufficient in my opinion.
