Just installed Windows XP. Icons, tray and 'start' too large.

I've just installed Windows XP on my pc.

The icon on the desktop, the tray at the bottom of the screen and the 'start' in the bottom left corner are all too large.

How do I go about shrinking these down a bit?

Thanks

Maybe the display resolution is incorrect - e.g. 800x600 instead of something larger?

Right click on the desktop at an empty spot.

Click on 'properties' . Then navigate to the 'settings' tab. Then you can adjust the screen resolution which controls the size of your icons.

Thanks! i've just gone to that section and yes it is set to 800x600 instead of 1024x768.

There is a slider there to adjust it up to 1024x768 but the slider does not appear to be working. When I click on it and try to drag it there is no movement.

Is there any way I can type in the 1024x768 from elsewhere?

If you're using an old machine it's possible that your monitor does not support any resolution above 800X600. If this is the case the only solution would be to replace your monitor I'm afraid.

Or else only default display drivers were installed and you need the latest drivers for your specific video card in order to get higher resolution and refresh rate (if using a CRT rather than a flat panel monitor) and use other special features. Have you done a Windows Update since reinstalling as it may find more up to date device drivers?

This pc and monitor are able to display 1024x768 as the desktop icons and tray are usually at the normal smaller size.

I've only changed the HD and installed Windows XP on it, but still using the same pc and monitor.

How would I go about getting the latest drivers and Windows update?

Windows Update is available from your Start Menu or Control Panel. Try this first. Some devices will still need drivers from the PC or device manufacturer's web site to be manually downloaded and installed. You need to know what you're doing if you tackle this. You should always do a Windows Update after a reinstall to make sure that all latest service packs and patches are applied. Generally you should also always configure it to at least look for and notify you of updates if not actually automatically install them. Windows Update is described in detail in the Windows help and also on Microsoft's website. If you are not sure what you're doing at any stage then get help from somebody who does.

I just tried installing my dial-up connection on this new HD so I could connect to the internet to download updates, but I cannot install the dial-up as it states the display is not set to the correct level.

So I can't adjust the display up, until I connect to the net to download updates, but I cannot connect to the net until the display is set correctly which allows me to install my dial-up connection.

I wonder if there would be any point re-installing Windows XP and maybe this time it will install at the correct setting of 1024x768 ?

You don't want to do a Windows Update over dial-up! Even on broadband it can take ages! I'm pretty sure that the above is not the verbatim error message. If you post the actual error text it might help.

Doesn't make any sense to me. You need to post specific details.

Doubt it.
