Could anybody recommend a sport/activity for a guy in his 30s to take up from scratch? Ideally looking for something team based but realise I'm probably a bit old to take up hurling or rugby!! Just looking for something thats a bit of craic and gets me out of the house!! Living around D15 so anything around there would be cool but willing to travel.

On the eve of Wimbledon.

Why not try tennis? See [broken link removed]

It is sociable and it's a sport you can hopefully play until you're 70+, particularly doubles, and has a high skill content to keep you interested. Dublin also hasthe biggest urban tennis league in Europe :- see www.dltc.net. Castleknock have teams at all levels of ability and indoor facilities for the winter. Even so I play outdoor all year round and you're rarely stopped by bad weather.

I think badminton is another good sport to pick up from scratch, similar to tennis. As an indoor sport you won't have to worry about getting cold, getting wet or playing in the dark in winter!

Cheers for that guys. Seeing as I work in an office all day I wouldn't mind getting out into the weather, even in Winter!!

I second the badminton suggestion. I took it up recently and am 30 (and a small bit!). Theres a badminton centre on Whitehall rd in Kimmage/Terenure. Don't know where you are but you could swing by and see what you think.

Agree with Carter on this one, tag rugby is a great social sport. From people who don't know what a ball looks like to the sports freak. All the info needed on tagrugby.ie

Squash is good-played indoors so weather is never an issue.
Personally I love the game, but it can be a high stress sport on joints so do be careful with it.

I know a few who played it at a high standard who had to retire from the game due to the impact it was having on the body (this is having played a lot from late teens into late thirties).

When played at a far lower level (like mine :p ) isn't/shouldn't be as much of an issue.

Check out Rip Rugby on www.astro.ie - I know they run Tag rugby all year round - so you should be sorted for the autumn season. If you can't wait till then they also have a free agents page where you can register your detailsand any teams looking for players can contact you.

Castleknock GAA have a good set-up going in your area. They have Junior teams and am sure they'd take you in.
St.Brigids also have a very good set up in D.15. Thye've a multitude of teams and Im sure they'd welcome you in up there. Gaelic football isnt too hard to master.
