Hi.
Having sold Aston Martin in March, fords new Chief Exec looks interested in selling Jaguar and Land Rover! Where does this leave Volvo? Would it be wise to buy a new Volvo with this potential change in ownership down the line?

I wouldn't have thought this to be an issue TBH. It's not exactly like the Rover situation...if anything Volvo is bringing Ford up not the other way around! If you're into Volvo I'd go right ahead.

I think Volvo is a premiuim brand taking on the likes of BMW whereas Ford is more mainstream (fleet cars) taking on the likes of Toyota, would you agree?

It has a better brand image and better trim etc but Ford are better engineered cars and have improved Volvo from that perspective since they bought them. I would not consider Volvo to have the same brand image as BMW, or the same quality of design or manufacture.

I'm not sure where you get this from?
Volvo aren't in the same league as BMW or Mercedes but are higher up the food chain than Ford.
Company ownership issues wouldn't bother me personally...it's not like you'll be dealing with a Rover scenario.

The point is that small brands like Volvo need bigger brands, like Ford, for technology transfers when they are developing a platform. At the moment Volvo's are basically overpriced Fords with a few extra bells and whistles. Ford has been good for Volvo, just as they have been good for Jaguar. If Volvo is bought by Fiat then its next generation platform may suffer. If GM or Toyota etc buy them they should be fine or may improve.

Not sure about the last quote....would have thought Volvo is a bigger auto maker than BMW with all their lorry/heavy duty trucks? BMW seem to do fine on the tech/platform front?

Comment is way off the mark. Yes the S40 and Focus Saloon are similar looking, and built on the same chassis and use the same engines.

However the V70, S80, C70 and XC90 are all unique to Volvo. Infact the 2522cc turbocharged 5 cylinder engine used in several Fords is a Volvo unit.

Well that would be my concern...that say FIAT or even some Private Equity group take over Volvo and after sales service etc. goes down the tube!!!.
Whatever the success of Ford in Europe things aren't happening in the US, Ford definitely need the dosh and this new chap looks intent on selling the acquisitions the previous guy built up.

Well I hope the V50 is a safer car than the Focus estate:confused:

According to Swedish newspapers today, Volvo AB and Renault SA are looking to buy back the Volvo car business from Ford. Watch this space.
