Roof window manufacturers other than Velux

Have had a quote from Velux for roof windows for a new build and it seems quite expensive. Has anybody used roof windows from another manufacturer. The velux brand seems to be synonomous with roof windows and was just wondering if there are alternatives out there?

There is another company called Fakro (WWW.fakro.com) who make roof windows. No idea how good or bad they are. I know they are a bit cheaper than Velux.

Me too Im looking at velux for our extension skylights. Didn't think about anyone else in the market as everyoe seems to call roof windows "velux's". The website for Fakro is fantastic, I am going to ring them tomorrow to judge some prices...

Thanks for the tip

Our builder recommended Fakro for the simple reason that the handle is on the lower part of the window and much easier to reach than Velcro. We're not in our house yet but the Fakro ones look fine. B.

I went for Fakro just because I needed them in a hurry & my local Builders Providers had them. They were cheaper, but identical to Velux, very good quality, do your research to be sure, but I can't find any reason to go with the more expensive Velux.

I have 12 no Velux windows in my house and I would not dream of anything else. They do such a wide range.

Each of my bedrooms have fire escape velux windows and in the en-suite's I have the white PVC ones so that the steam won't effect the window. From the outside they all look identical. I have siesta blackout blinds in the bedrooms and venetian blinds on the en-suite ones.

Excellent service. (no connection by the way - just a happy customer)

Price them around there is a big difference from retailer to retailer (even though they should be the same price everywhere - even within the same suppliers in different branches!!!!)

Roofers have commented to me that the flashing on the fakro is very weak and would not recommend them, we have 4 Velux in ours at the moment

Had occasion to use Roto roof windows in the past.

They were considerably cheaper than velux, but velux were certainly better quality with better service. Roto used to be distributed by Carey Glass

They now do a Vista Therm roof window. I am not familiar with that product.

My personal opinion is that Velux remain hard to beat, and are the undoubted market leaders for a reason. However I approve of additional competition to Velux as they are not cheap.
