I would like to sand and varnish floors in my bedroom. It's a new house and I've seen it in a neighbours and looks fantastic. Anyone any comments or anyone they can recommend to do it?

Thanks!

Hi,

Welcome to AAM.

Were your neighbours not able to give advice/recommendation? As you particularly like theirs it might be the best route.

you go to your local hire shop and tell them what your doing, the hire would be bout 60 or 70 for a drum sander and for the machine to do round your skirting boards is another say 40.
sandpaper is extra but not much.
move all the furniture out of the room and good luck!

oh yeah, 4got, the mask! make sure that it's the best. like the old gas masks design. If you get those ones with just the flimsy straps, after the job it feels like you're trying to cough up a tree! and the dust settles everywhere and I mean everywhere!
If the hire guy is good enough then he'll instruct you on how to work the machines.

Ditto as per all the above posts. But as a tip = I used Translac Varnish when I'd sanded mine down. It was the cheapest at the time, but as luck would have it, the result and the shine from it was terrific.

Thanks folks, my friends have recommended I do it myself.
So I need:
- Sander for main floor approx €60
- Sander for around skirting approx €40
- Good breating apparatus
- Wood stain
- Varnish (Translac)

Would a girl have any trouble using the sander? I've been told it's just like hoovering if that's the case I should have no trouble

No but you'll need some help getting the floor sander upstars. There is a technique for sanding floorboards (i.e direction of sanding, grit of paper to use etc). I'm no expert so maybe someone who has done it more recently could advise on this before you take on the job. I'm fairly sure you should sand along the boards rather than across them and you should spend some time making sure all nails/screws are below the surface or you will spend the whole day replacing the ripped sandpaper on the machine. Don't let the sander stand still while running or you will have a big hole in your floor in a few seconds.

Open the windows and put old towels around the door to stop the dust escaping to the rest of the house. IT GETS EVERYWHERE.

When you start using the big sander, it's like walking a 20 stone pitbull past a rabbit farm! like if you're not ready for it it'll go onya, but if the hire guy is on the ball then he should tell you what paper to start with (bout a 40 grade) to what to finish with. and the dust,.... well need we say
eeeeeeeeeverywhere!

Oiled floors are my personal favourite, have you seen this timber floor down before?

Apologies, I know this thread is a bit old.

Whats the difference between an oiled and a varnished floor ?
Why do you think the oiled is better

Thanks

An oiled floor gives a much deeper colour but takes a long time to do....
at least to my satisfaction.
Which part of the country are you in?
I recommended a floor sander called David Barnes before to people and he is highly thought of.
After you take the cost of hiring the machine, the sandpaper, the varnish and the brushes you'll see its worth while to get a professional in to do it for you.
