Practically the same only i don't think you tune it in.

You tune the tv in, then use a scart lead coming from the tv, leading into the back of the dvd-recorder. (presuming that your taping from terrestrial i.e. rte1, rte2, tv3 or tg4)
If you're recording from sky or any other digital, you put the cable into the reciever box and then the scart-lead from the box into the dvd recorder.

Is it not usual for the DVD recorder to include its own tuner?
Yes.

Do yourself a favour & spend the extra few bucks & buy a DVD recorder with a hard disk drive (HDD), not to be confused with High-Definition (HD). The HDD allows you to store stuff on the HDD without struggling with DVD disks, and you can store loads of stuff. The HDD sizes vary from about 80G to 320G.

We have a DVD recorder with a hard disk and record tons of stuff. When there's nothing on the TV there's also something on your hard disk. Without the hard disk is much cheaper but you really need one!

I also would recomend going for a HDD recorder. DVD burning is slow, and managing the disks is a pain in the butt. I exchanged ours for a HDD recorder. With a HDD recorder you can tell it record your favorite programs every week, and just forget about it. You can put stuff on a DVDRW if you want to watch it somewhere else.

Sky+ is better again but more expensive.

Also recommend paying a little bit more and getting one with a HDD - fantastic. So easy to use - no getting down on knees in front of tv and fiddling with DVDs or videos.

Check out pixmania.com for good prices (just make sure you order something that's listed as 'in stock'.)

Another plus of the hard-drive models is that they usually allow pausing of live tv. Handy if you're watching that episode of Corrie and the phone rings!

If you're recording from Sky or an NTL box, you will need to use a SCART cable into the DVD recorder.

However, if recording from an analogue channel (an NTL Basic channel, RTE1, RTE2, UTV, C4, E4, BBC1, BBC2, Setanta, TG4, C6, etc. - full list ), on a recurring basis, you should tune in the channels on the DVD recorder.

While the quality will be better when using the SCART from your NTL or Sky box, you have to have the decoder box on the right channel. If you want to record every episode of some TV show, the analogue option is better as the DVD recorder will tune to the correct channel without having to have the decoder box on, and on the correct channel.

Can NTL digital be connected directly to the dvd recorder?
Or does it need to be connecte to the tv - and from the tv to the dvd-recorder?

I'm thinking this to upscale the NTL Digital picture on my 42" Sharp LCD (Full HD).

[broken link removed]

The manuals say it upscales video to 576p (has to be better than my current NTL picture). Does anyone think it will work?

Thanks

K

Just in case it is of interest to you, NTL are meant to be bring out at PVR sometime in July. It will hopefully offer the functionality of Sky +. Obviously this being NTL the key words are "meant" and "hopefully"!

But I don't think it will be HD.
