Door saddles - New home

Hi,

I'm currently snagging a house which I've bought and noticed that no door saddles were put in place. Are these a standard fitting in a new build and am I within my rights to expect them to be installed? Also, do they serve any real purpose? I've noticed that some people just opt for that strip of metal/aluminum in place of door sadles these days.

Do u have timber floors, sometime they don't put down saddles, wont panic about it

I'm not overly bothered about it, just seemed a bit odd that they didn't put them in. Also, I'll have timber and tiles downstairs and carpet and tiles upstairs.

It's down to personal taste & builders cutting costs & corners, I think it looks nice to have door saddles where you change from one floor type to another and the joinings are concealed under the saddle board. Its not a big job to put them in, any carpenter would do it. I'm sure the builder would if asked, and yes I would be expecting them to be there anyway.

From what I've seen, generally you don't have saddles with a wooden floor, as usually they run the wood straight through the doorways.

U can do it both ways, as said it is personal choice, we went with saddle all over even though we have timber floors.

Yeah, with timber, I'd have that running continuously through the house. I think it would be nice to have door saddles where carpet/timber meets a tiled area though.

I have door saddles in my house, and totally hate them. Mind you, it wouldn't be so bad if the builders hadn't stained them dark brown! But I hope to persuade the other half to let me get rid of them this year.

Hi,

Just purchased new home last year. All door saddles were in place. However, we put down timber floor in sitting room and hallway and cut out 3 saddle boards ourselves. It wasnt an easy job as they were screwed up some way.

It looks nice having the floor running straight through without the saddle boards as another poster said.

We left half the saddle board on the way into the downstairs loo, all you can see is the gold strip when door is closed. :)

Probably a dumb question but if you do away with door saddles does that not leave a big wind howling gap because the doors would have been fitted to allow for the saddle?

When doing our house, the builder left the door saddles, for us to install later if we wished too. We opted not to use them (I hate them) as we only have carpet in two bedrooms

Regarding the screwed up door saddles, Ive had some real issues with removing these, the door frame cracks. The doors that have the screws in like this are prehung doors sets, its the quick way for the builder to get his doors hung.

I would agree the door saddle should come with the house, and if you have carpet or different floor finishes it allows for a neat change over.

True. The only reason not to do them is if the builder knows you are putting in wooden floors that run straight through. Even then you'll probably need a couple here and there, into the kitchen, WC etc.

Think builder is cutting corners, regardless of whether or not you end up using them, they should be put in when door frames are installed as otherwise your door frames could twist out of shape.
