Hi all,

Im just wondering has anybody else noticed that the price of package holidays has gone up alot or is it just me?

I nearly allways book a package holiday, and im trying to book something now for say in a month or so.

Everywhere seems so expensive at the min, I know the prices will drop a few days before the time but I like to have a couple of weeks notice for work etc.

Any thoughts anyone?

Book your time off work now and book your holiday later when the prices have dropped (If your not choosy about the destination!)

The cost of flying has increased 37% in past year, according to reports. that has to impact on package holiday prices.

Compared to when? Probably also depends on the destination, supply/demand etc. Too many factors to generalise I'd say.

For the last 4/5 years I've never bothered with a package hol. I guess it depends on your circumstances, but decide where you want to go and price the flights. Then there are hundreds of sites offering various deals on accomodation. If you see something you like, go into tripadvisor.com or virtualtourist.com to see what other visitors have said about it. I have to say I haven't gone wrong yet. Has always worked out perfect (Wait now for the moans after this year's hols -jinxed!!! ) And it has worked out way cheaper. If you give it a shot once, you will probably never book a package again.

In the past few years I tried rolling my own and could never beat the packages on price and convenience. Again it may depend on destination, circumstances etc.

I prefer package too when going on hols. Too much stress trying to organise yourself when all you want is to escape, escape, escape..>>!

I suppose to each their own. But it really isn't the slightest bit stressful organising it yourself. I'd never do it any other way now and I've found the level of service you get from being an individual as opposed to part of a group is way superior. Every request you make is honoured. Even all my family & friends have started doing it now, cos they've seen how successful mine do turn out. Anyway, different strokes!! :)

ya,i went on a package holiday last week for 7days (im a die hard backpacker),booked it on weds anf flew out on friday morning,corfu/hotel/flights 240yoyo's...
Now,i always say that planning and booking a holiday uourself adds to the adventure but this year i just wanted to be lazy for a change...
I had a great holiday and didnt really spend much...
So, if i was advising you, i would say, book your hols and log on to the net 3days before hand and keep an eye out for a cheap holiday, you will def get 1...

A lot depends on your own circumstances and who your going with. I've just just booked my first family DIY holiday and so far so good.

Here's the way I went about it,.

1. Go to Ryanair.com or Aerlingus.com and pick a country and airport and approx date that you want to go. Have a look at the prices, check alternative dates, departure/arrival times, all that sort of thing.

2. Go to these sites and look at appts and villas. www.holidaylettings.co.uk and www.holiday-rentals.co.uk. Click on the area near the airport that you are flying into. Check the availability of properties that you are interested in.

Remember that you will be hiring a car from the airport and dropping it back there so depending on the time your flight arrives at, you are looking for anywhere within driving distance of the airport while it is still bright.

3. E-mail the owner and make any enquiries that you have that are not answered in the advertisement (changeover day, cost of extra days, car parking, proximity to towns & restaurants etc).

4. Go to [broken link removed]. They trawl through the car rental companies in the country that you are looking at and get you a cheap price.

5. Go online and get annual travel insurance for the family. This will normally be much much cheaper than the insurance offered by the travel agents and airlines and will last for the whole year.

As far as I know you can rent a sat nav device from the car rental company when you get there but from what I've heard they charge an arm and a leg and its nearly as cheap to buy one (or borrow one even better) here before you go which you can use next year and so on.

Arranging your holiday this way, you should make considerable savings. You are cutting out the middle man. I normally hire a car for a couple of days on holidays, now I have it for the whole holiday.

Again, depending on the size of the group family you are travelling with, you can book a two or three bedroomed appt/villa. You don't have to worry about underoccupancy supplements etc.

You can see the pictures of your accomodation, the pool, the view from the balcony whatever. Has it air-conditioning, pool view, TV, private or communal pool, washing machine and dishwasher. For a relatively small bit extra you can really stay in style, but it seems to me that the general standard of the accomodation available is quite high.

If your going for two weeks, you might decide that you want a two centre holiday. All you have to do is pack up the car and drive to the new accomodation for the second week.

Finally, you know what time your flight back is. You don't have to get into the pick up bus hours before your flight after which the bus calls to every other hotel/appt block on the route to pick up more passengers.

One possible downside is that the luggage allowance is very small and both aerlingus and Ryanair will try and bankrupt you if you exceed their limits (E8.00 per KG with Ryanair on luggage over 15Kgs). Having said that you know what these limits are in advance so if you do get charged it's your own fault.

The travel agent reps at the meet and greet party on my holidays last year said that we could be charged for excess baggage on the return flight, but we never heard anything more about it. There was no free meal/soft drinks on the flights which used to be included and the Reps offered to make sure that the family was sitting together on the return flight for a fee. How generous of them!.

Fair duce Murt for the thoroughness. This is just one that I want to add to the list as I find it good for accomodation and as I previously said, if you like the look of it, don't book until you check what other holiday makers had to say about it on virtualtourist & tripadvisor.

i would say they are
But sometimes it is outside their control

For example from Cork to Budapest in sept there is only one airline flying and the flights alone for return are 220 each , thats high enough

went to a travel agent here in cork and was quoted €732 each for 6 nights in Budapest , sure u could be to America with that

I thought that was way over the top , and i know i can go ahead and book flights and hotel sep myself but if it was reasonable via the agent i'd go that route

Anyway i think it does help to shop around cause u can get good savings

Hi guys,

well im still looking and looking. I couldnt be bothered trying to book flights, accommodation, car all seperate to much hassle.

Im not lazy just havent time! I actually came across Lanzarote for €129 there leaving sunday gone by for 7days. Only catch was not knowing where you were going to be staying.

I have booked some time of now, and will just book holiday couple of days in advance of going.

I suppose its a little bit more exciting that way, your not waiting a couple of months!

I wouldn't say not knowing is always a catch as they usually say 3*, 4* or whatever so you know what the general standard of the accommodation will be... We chose 'allocated on arrival' last year and worked out fine to be honest!

Bon Voyage!

Yeah I'm with you. I first start travelling independently 7 years ago. I find it the best way to travel. Also it gives you much more freedom. Last year I wanted to go to a particular place in the south of France that it wasn't possible to get to on a package deal. I flew to Nice, jumped in a taxi and was in my hotel (pre booked) within 20 minutes. Definitely not stressful! I'd never go on a package holiday again. Once you've done one, they're all the same. Also if you're flixible with your dates you can get some great deals. 4 of us spent Xmas in NY a few years back. It worked out at E600 flights and hotel for 5 nights. Hard to beat!!
