Gardai wearing flak jackets

Is anyone else slightly concerned of the ever-increasing militarization of the Gardai, it seems to have started with heavy boots and combat style trousers and now I notice that the majority of the force have taken to wearing the anti-stab jackets.
While I'm not criticizing any worker wearing safety gear if there is even a slight risk of injury, I have to say it is unnerving to me to see how widespread it has spread throughout the country.
Understandably if it was in the major cities/towns , but in a small town in Wexford or Offaly I feel is over the top, how many Gardai get stabbed a year at two in the afternoon in Birr. While if it had no side effects then they would be no issue , but what happens is that it adds to the media frenzy of how an imaginary crime ridden society we exist in with thugs, rapists, drug dealers and scum lurking in every corner. My own mother believes the sensational headlines being constantly spewed out and hence is almost fearful to step out after dark in her very safe small home town.
It must be noted have I have 100% pride and admiration for our unarmed Gardai, and the fact that the majority of the GRA to remain that way despite pressure over deaths/injuries to arm. I've many a time boasted that fact when I lived in the US, Canada and Australia even though the international media had portrayed the entire island as bandit country.
Irish society has a tenfold better relationship with its law enforcement officers than the majority of its western neighbours and I for one would wish to keep it for as long as possible.
I just despise the thought that before long our police force will be armed/threatening and the negative changes that will follow

when I went to the polling station recently, there was one garda present outside wearing one...... couldn't understand why

Anti stab vests are not the same as flak jackets!

and FF and FG are two fundamentally different political parties worlds apart, cop on, whats the pleasure in hopping on peoples words after doing a dictionary search, I'm sure they have some official term but for the laypeople its just armoured clothing.

If it saves one Guards life, I am happy for them to wear what they want. They are a professional police force and the stab vests are pretty common in every country now especially in the UK since their police force is also unarmed.

I dunno, seems a pretty unintrusive method of protection to me. When I see guards cycling along on mountain bikes I kind of find it hard to invisage impending militarisation. :p

Yeah thats fine - no argument there - but there is a diff between wearing one in the city at 3am after people pouring out of nightclubs as opposed to at a polling station in a primary school at 5pm in the afternoon.

So what if the guy or gal at the polling station gets called to a domestic straight after their stint at the polling station?

i don't think that there is any notification to the cops when they could get stabbed hence wearing it all the time....
for example who would have thought that a garda car would have been rammed in the middle of the afternoon down in kilkenny?

,,,,yeah bu common sense should prevail in fairness. Each situation is different.

Common sense doesn't come into it when it comes to people carrying knives. What harm is the guard doing by wearing it? If you had a relative as a guard, would you not like him/her to be protected when they are on duty?

Can't believe that people are even arguing about this. Not as if they are carrying around sub-machine guns.

It's NOT a flak jacket as implied by the original post. If it was then it might add more weight to the original argument/point about alleged militarisation of Garda uniforms/equipment. Hardly a merely semantic or off topic point? Unlike yours?

The garda car was rammed in the middle of the morning at 3am when it was dark. And this is no benefit to the discussion at all. About as useful as a comment on the chance of a lemon falling from the sky and killing a garda if he was not wearing a had hat!

As I said it is the fear it creates in people for a non existent problem in the vast majority of the country.

Why are people whinging so much. If I was a guard I would wear one too. They are a general protection garment for the upper body, and will protect the wearer against stabbings/sharp instruments, as well as other weapons like steel bars/baseball bats etc. And also a 'run-in' with a general scumbag off his/her head on drugs looking for a fight with anyone close enough.

AFAIK, the guards have been told that they don't have to wear these jackets, but they may have problems with their insurance if they are injured on duty and not wearing them.

This is exactly what I also heard.

Personally if it protects Gardai while on duty then where is the problem? The days of the Guard in his tunic and hattootling along on his bicycle are well gone unfortunately.

If you find use of such jackets intimidating, why not approach the pgarda ombudsman?
