Reset Dig Camera - lost all images

hi I was having problems with my Canon Digital camera so decided to "Reset All" in tools menu, presuming it would reset default settings. But alas all my pictures were deleted - gone completely. I had most of them downloaded to PC but had about 100 from a hen weekend and a wedding that are really important. No warning issued when I reset all... If I was making such a big step shouldn't a message have alerted me that I would lose pictures? Someone said if I bring in memory card to Camera shop they will send it away and get it fixed? Does anyone know if this works? Thanks in advance.

There is software available on the web to be able to recover files on a memory stick if they are deleted as what it actually does is allow that memory space that a picture is taken up to be over written. Do not take anymore pictures on that memory stick as this will overwrite what pictures you have.

I can't be sure though if you memory stick has been deleted or formated. If formated it is doubtful that you can recover. If it was deleted you have a good chance. You would have to get someone you know who would be fairly techie to try it though. Though its not that difficult.

Something like one of these would probally do it. . Hope it helps

As you original question has been answered....

....No warning issued when I reset all... If I was making such a big step shouldn't a message have alerted me that I would lose pictures?....

Rule to live by. Never assume anything technical or computer related is smart, it generally isn't. Always assume the worst and take appropriate precautions.

While you're in the right frame of mind. Are your photos on your PC backed up somewhere else? Where they can't be deleted.

Be that as it may I've generally found the user interface on Canon cameras to be easy to use and to issue warnings before drastic options can be chosen. I'm curious as to what the specific model was here to check what the manual says about that reset option. I presume that it was a reformat of the card (among other actions?) but maybe not and maybe if you stick the card in a USB card reader you might find the image files still there?

I never got a chance yet to try options suggested.
The model is Canon Digital IXUS 60. I hadn't backed up last 100 or so pictures and they are the ones I want to retrieve. Thanks for suggestions

From a quick scan of the manual for that camera I don't think that Reset All reformats the card and I still wonder if as side effect of resetting the other camera settings to default values is that it simply cannot see the images on the card and that these are still there and readable by a card reader etc.?

Note also that if you reset the camera values then you may run the risk of overwriting existing images uploaded to your computer when you take more and sync the camera again. This can happen when the image numbering used for naming files is reset and generates conflicts with existing images. However I would expect the software to warn you. But still probably a good time to backup any images on your computer just in case.
