Unzipping/extracting software

I'm used to using a Mac and am now on a Windows laptop.

I usually use Stuffit Expander on the Mac for extracting files. What should I use for Windows that's free? Everything I'm finding requires payment.

Is there a Stuffit equivalent?

Is winzip not free? If not download 7-zip which can handle zip and rar. I also thought XP handled zips seamlessly.

Winzip doesn't appear to be free. I'll have a look at 7-zip. Thanks

When you say "seamlessly", do you mean I just click and it should open?

XP treats zips as directories so you can view the contents inside, and if you right-click on the zip file you should be able to extract. I don't know about vista.

Winrar is indeed excellent. I thought the licence ran out after a month though. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I have it installed a long time and I've never registered or anything, It doesn't have the annoying pop up that winzip has either.

WinRAR is not free. I use 7-zip which is. It can pack and unpack 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR files and unpack RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS files.

Has anyone tried KGB archiver? It has psycho compression!!!

But if its compression you want and not just a passworded archive, [broken link removed] does the job and its free. Although it takes ages, it has excellent compression.
Make sure it's the windows version (at the top) the other is for ms-dos although it works in windows.

:D
