I have a creative Zen V 2gb and just bought a new wall mountable stereo (philips) with USB connection to the front. According to both manuals im doing everything right (connecting MP3 to stereo with USB cable!!) The stereo is saying No audio on it. I use Windows Media so am wondering why the stereo isn't picking up the songs i have on MP3 player?

Any ideas

Sabre Man - i know i am a lady and all that but i think id know that much!! Yeah both machines switched on!! Any other ideas?

I have a home cinema system that has a USB port. Not all MP3 players are compatible-is there a list of compatible devices in the manual?

no there dosn't seem to be a list - i just thought i may be doing something wrong or not doing something i should be doing with it.

Could be a setting on the Philips device or a setting on the Zen.

It would be worth trying to put some MP3 on a memory key, plugging this into the stereo to see if this is picked up, just to rule out the problem being on the Zen side.

What is the model number of the Philips stereo, btw?

It could be where the tracks are placed in the Zen, if they are in a folder for example perhaps the Philips can't find them. Or perhaps they need to be in a specific folder.

Any chance you are ripping to WMA and the Philips device only understands MP3? Or maybe the tracks are ripped in some other format or bitrate (e.g. variable versus constant bitrate or too high a bitrate) that the Philips device does not understand? Or maybe there are DRM issues?

I think, the Zen V is doesn't support UMS for music only for data. Its uses MTP instead for music transfers. The Philips will most likely only works with MP3 players that support UMS for music.

If you create a data partion on the Zen V and copy music in there, The Philips will probably be able to see them. But the Zen V won't.

A player like the Samsung YP-U2 supports UMS fully and would work as you expect. I have one and it worked with a Philips HIFI with a USB port I tried recently.

Yes-I have 2 Samsung MP3 players that plug directly into my home cinema system. I picked up the last one soley for this purpose on e-bay for around €50 (2 gb).

Thanks for all the replies - the model is MCM275 Microsystem. It must be that the stereo isn't picking up the WMA files. I suppose ill have to ask Mr Sammie to buy me an mp3 that is compatible - good luck to me - took me long enough to get the Zen!!

If WMA is the problem (and we don't yet know that it is) then you don't need a new player - you just need to rip to MP3 and download these files onto the existing player! If Windows Media Player doesn't support MP3 ripping (don't use it so don't know) then there are numerous other free and commercial alternatives. Did the Creative player not come with Creative MediaSource for example which can be used to rip and manage tracks?

The Philips supports WMA.

WMA v9 or earlier version (copy protected music will not play on this device).

It also says

  • The MP3 player may not be a USB Mass storage device
    • The player supports most USB Mass storage devices (MSD) that these devices are compliant to the USB MSD standards. Most common Mass storage class devices are flash drives, memory sticks, jump drives and etc.

Its a common problem with lots of players.
