Hi,
I have a Creative Zen (20Gb) and I used MediaSource Organiser sw.
I ripped a CD to create MP3 files - when I listen to them on the player I hear a 'click' every 4 or so seconds (very annoying!). I was wondering if this is a common problem and are there ways of reducing or removing this sound on MP3 files ?
Thanks in advance for any help people can give me !

Its caused by error correction... does your ripping software have an option to turn this off ?

quite common an older cd's

Maybe try another CD ripper even just as a test for comparison? Maybe CDex since it is pretty simple to use and uses the well proven LAME back end? Or maybe EAC but that may be a little more complicated.

Thanks for the suggestions - I thought it was due to the compresson rate I was using.

The Creative software doesn't seem to have an option to turn it off - I'll take your advise Clubman and try a different program.

That is why I recommend EAC. You can read the full features on the website but it is designed to avoid any audio corruption in the resulting wave file.

Do you mean the bitrate? If so then I'm pretty sure that the Creative MediaSource software has options for configuring this. Note that EAC (and maybe other rippers, in particular those using the LAME engine) have options to do repeated sampling which is slower but can lead to better quality and error correction if necessary.

"Compression rate" would surely most likely refer to bitrate (and type - e.g. constant versus variable)?

Indeed. But I was reading between the lines. Clicks in my limited experience are usually a bad rip, as jhegarty suggests possibly related to error correction or sometimes I/O problems due to CPU ultilisation or similar. Compression artifacts generally don't sound like clicks. YMMV. I find you don't get clicks with the better regarded ripping applications. CDEX, EAC, AudioGrabber etc. Media Monkey is my favorite music manager but I almost always get clicks when I rip Lame MP3's using it. So I don't use it to rip. I like AudioGrabber because its relatively simple. iTunes also seems ok, though I prefer using Audograbber & Lame.

Sorry to be unclear - the Creative ripping software has no mention of 'error correction' and has no option to turn it on or off.

When I heard the clicks, I thought it was due to the bitrate setting I was using - so I was changing it to Variable / Constant, different % of quality etc but still got the clicks..

I'll give AudioGrabber a go - thanks again for the feedback
